BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team hosted Pratt Institute and the City College of New York for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons fell in a hard-fought five-set match to the Cannoneers of Pratt before taking down the CCNY Beavers in three sets to cap off the day.

  • Athena Kazos totaled 30 kills and 17 digs on the day, including a double-double against Pratt
  • Skyler Kawecki-Muonio totaled six service aces and 12 kills for the Gryphons
  • Kaille Ferguson racked up 46 digs and added five assists for the Gryphons
  • Mia Rector continued her success as a setter, with two 25+ assist performances, totaling 54 on the day to lead the team

Game 1- Pratt vs. Sarah Lawrence

The Gryphons and Cannoneers traded early scoring runs early in the first set, which would foreshadow the remainder of the match. The Cannoneers would claim the first set on two SLC errors, but the set would be marked by a three-point run after a 12-12 tie. After claiming a 15-12 lead, the visitors did not look back and took the set 25-18. The second set would go back-and-forth but it would be a five-point run that would give SLC an 11-7 lead and allow them to remain in control throughout the set. Five Kazos kills would help propel the Gryphons and after taking a 23-19 lead, the Gryphons would use a key kill by Kawecki-Muonio via a Mia Rector assist to reach set point and take the set 25-21 on the next rally.

The third set would see an 11-11 tie turn into a 16-11 Pratt lead after two SLC errors and three Pratt kills, but a 10-1 run by the Gryphons would erase the deficit and the hosts would find themselves with a 21-17 lead with the ability to take a 2-1 set lead. The Cannoneers would not go down easily, taking six of the next seven points to reclaim a narrow 23-22 lead and threaten a set-point. After a service error to tie the set at 23, the Gryphons forced a Pratt error to give themselves a chance to take the set with a 24-23 lead. Despite the opportunity, the Cannoneers took the final three points of the set to remain in control with a one-set advantage. The Gryphons came out of the gate hot in the fourth set, taking the first five points thanks to two Mia Rector service aces and a kill by Kawecki-Muonio. Pratt would once again battle back, but the Gryphons would answer each Pratt score with two of their own it seemed, remaining in control and using a Tabitha Hardin-Zollo service ace to claim the set 25-16 and force a deciding fifth set of play.

After a Pratt kill to open the set, Kazos would respond with two of her own to give SLC a lead, but Pratt would go on a five-point run thanks to three Emily Sontag kills and take a commanding 6-2 lead. Georgi Massey would answer with a kill to stop the streak and Kawecki-Muonio would tally two service aces as the Gryphons tied the Cannoneers at six points in what looked like a deciding set that could go down to the wire. Pratt was relentless, taking the next six points to claim a 12-7 lead and despite a Raegan Lacombe kill late in the set, the Cannoneers would clinch the match one rally later, winning the decider 15-9 and claiming a hard-fought victory.

Game 2: CCNY vs. Sarah Lawrence

Sarah Lawrence dominated the Beavers early on, answering every CCNY score with three of their own and jumping out to an early 14-8 lead. A seven-point run in the middle of the set would bring the score to 21-9 and kills by Kazos and Kawecki-Muonio a few rallies later would help seal a 25-13 victory for the Gryphons. The second set was even more dominant, with a 10-1 lead for SLC turning into a 25-7 victory, clinched by a Mia Rector kill and two late-set service aces by Kawecki-Munio.

The third and final set was the polar opposite of the first two, the Beavers came out of the intermission ready to compete, staying close with SLC but still finding themselves trailing 13-10. The Beavers would take 10 of the next 13 points and assert themselves with a 20-16 lead, threatening to take the hosts to a fourth set. Amelia Gedda, Georgi Massey and Kazos would all tally kills in the final rallies of the set, as SLC used two separate three-point scoring runs to bring the Beavers to match-point with a score of 24-22. After a CCNY kill to delay the victory, Rector once again found Kazos as the Gryphons took down the Beavers 25-23 in a close third set.
