How it Happened

The match was a series of back-and-forth, in each set. The Gryphons and Mariners battled throughout the first set of play, with neither team able to jump out to a substantial lead. The Gryphons found themselves up 21-20 and a kill by Guemple put them up by two. Despite trading points, the Gryphons found themselves up 24-22 and another score by the Mariners brought the lead down to one despite the visitors reaching set point. After a well-timed timeout by coach John Carroll, the Gryphons took the set on a USMMA service error.

The Mariners surged back with a 5-0 opening to the second set, but the Gryphons would battle back to tie it at 12 points apiece and force a timeout by USMMA. After tying once again 19-19, the Mariners took three straight points before SLC responded with two of their own, bringing the score to 22-21. An SLC service error and two USMMA kills gave the Mariners the final three points of the set as they evened the match at one seat apiece.

The third set was defined by a series of runs by both teams, with the Gryphons ending up the beneficiaries of a late timeout and a consequent three-point scoring run to take a 23-18 lead with hopes of gaining a one set advantage. After a USMMA service error, the Gryphons found themselves at set point and while the hosts would answer with a kill, it would be one of Guemple's team-high 18 kills that would secure the set for the visitors.

The fourth set was similar to the first, with both teams jockeying for the lead, but it would be a five-point swing in the middle of the set that gave USMMA a 16-12 lead that would prove too much for the Gryphons to overcome. SLC would not give up, tying the set at 21-21 and 22-22 before the Mariners used two kills and an SLC attack error to claim the set 25-22 and force a deciding fifth set.

In the deciding set, the teams would both struggle to convert on opportunities, with five of the first eight points coming via attack errors. The Gryphons would find themselves up 5-3 after the string of miscues, but the hosting Mariners would not go down without a rally. The two teams would trade points back-and-forth with SLC maintaining their lead until another USMMA attack error gave the Gryphons a 9-6 advantage. That cushion would be eliminated as the hosts took the next three points to tie the set up thanks to a key block by Virginia Robert and Erin Stillinger. A kill by Guemple gave the lead back to the visitors and another USMMA attack error brought the score to 11-9. Five straight points would go the way of the Mariners as they stormed back to take a 14-11 lead, forcing match point and requiring the Gryphons to score four straight points if they were to mount a comeback.Guemple would secure another kill to bring the lead down to two points, but a USMMA kill on the next rally would secure the set and the match for the hosts in what has been the closest match to date for Sarah Lawrence.
