Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Trio of Gryphons end in Double-Digits in Skyline-Opener

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team opened conference play with a matchup against the Yeshiva Maccabees in New York, N.Y. this afternoon. The Gryphons fell to the Maccabees by a score of 66-78 after Yeshiva put up 54 points in the second half of the contest.

Top Performers
  • Lucas Murray continued his solid play for the Gryphons, earning a double-double with 19 points and 11 assists
  • Andrew Kim had his best offensive game this season, scoring 15 points while shooting efficiently from the field and racking up seven assists
  • Eamon Kelly was the third Gryphon in double-digits, scoring 12 points and pulling down six rebounds

How it Happened

The Maccabees struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 29% from the field and 14% from deep. Neither team was able to score from inside in the first 20 minutes, with Yeshiva scoring 10 points in the paint and the Gryphons scoring six. The Maccabees scored 14 points off SLC turnovers and despite their poor shooting start they remained down by just one point with a minute to go in the first half. The Gryphons would take control right before the break, when a steal by Kim in the final seconds turned into a Derek Hickman dunk to beat the buzzer and send the Gryphons into the break with a three-point advantage.

A 28-0 scoring run to open the second half would put the Maccabees in control and allow them to remain on top throughout the remainder of the contest. Back-to-back triples from Mason Meyers and Kyle Jefferson stopped the nearly eight-minute scoring drought for the Gryphons to open the half, but it would not be enough to overcome the lead that the Maccabees had built up. Kim and Kelly would connect from deep a few minutes later and Murray would assert himself under the basket, but it would be too little too late. A Kelly three-pointer would bring the lead down to double-digits with 2:54 remaining, but that would be as close as the Gryphons would get, unable to close the gap despite their late-half rally.

Up Next

The Gryphons (1-5, Skyline 0-1) will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to the Bronx to take on Lehman College for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference showdown at The APEX Center. The Gryphons will then welcome Pratt Institute to Bronxville on Thursday night before heading to Centenary College on Saturday.
