How it Happened

Both teams struggled to score in the first quarter, but a 13-0 run by the Valiants to end the quarter put them ahead by 12 heading into the first intermission. The Gryphons would put up a much better offensive performance in the second quarter, scoring 14 points on the back of two triples by Colleen Coughlin, but the Valiants stayed even with the Gryphons and the host headed into the half down 12.

The Valiant defense held the SLC offense in check in the third quarter, allowing just one basket from the field throughout the entire period, a Kaila Dorch layup. The Valiants started knocking down shots as well, connecting from deep three times and scoring 24 points in the quarter to take a 31-point advantage into the final quarter of play. Reigning player-of-the-week Haymore scored 10 points in the final quarter, but it would not be enough as the Valiants had an answer to every score and as the final buzzer sounded the visitors claimed a 73-39 victory to drop SLC to 1-1 in conference play.
