Anderson-Strawder and Haymore Lead Gryphons over Farmingdale 63-58

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team defeated the Farmingdale State Rams on Saturday afternoon to move to 2-1 in Skyline play this season. The Gryphons defeated the Rams by a score of 63-58 as they held on for the victory.

Top Performers
  • Senior Kendall Haymore earned her fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 18 rebounds for SLC
  • First-Year Khailand Anderson-Strawder led the team with a career-best 17 points along with six rebounds for the Gryphons
  • Guard Colleen Coughlin finished the game with 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists to help lead the Gryphons to the win

How it Happened

The Gryphons held the Rams offense in check throughout the first two quarters, limiting them to 12 points in each of the first two periods. The Gryphons held the Rams scoreless from deep as the hosts missed all 11 of their shots from three-point range in the first half, while the Gryphons connected four times in the first 20 minutes.

Ariana Spanopoulos opened the scoring for the day with a triple off an Anderson-Strawder assist less than a minute into the game. The Gryphons would stay ahead for the remainder of the quarter with the Rams staying within reach before five straight SLC points scored by Christina Reilly, including a last-second three-pointer off a Kaila Dorch assist, would propel the visitors to a four-point advantage heading into the first intermission. The Rams would tie the contest at 18 points apiece three minutes into the second quarter, but three made free-throws by Anderson-Strawder and another Spanopoulos three-pointer would help the Gryphons regain control. Another connection from deep by the Jamaica, N.Y. native in the final minute of first-half play would send the Gryphons into the halftime break with a 33-24 lead without any scoring contribution from Haymore, the team's leading scorer.

The senior from Houston, Texas did not wait to get involved in the second half, taking a pass from Spanopoulos and scoring less than 30 seconds into second-half play. The Rams would bring the lead down to four points but a successful three-point play by Dorch off a Haymore assist would put the team up seven once again after a timeout by coach Alexander. The Rams would not surrender, knocking down a three immediately in response and scoring again to bring the lead down to two points. A trip to the line for Anderson-Strawder would bring the lead to three points but another FSC score by Layla Mendoza reduced the lead to one point. Haymore would score the game's next six points and the next nine for the Gryphons, giving them a two-possession lead once again, despite a last-second trip to the line for the Rams that reduced the lead to five points with 10 minutes remaining.

The Rams kept the game close at the beginning of the final quarter before Anderson-Strawder scored five straight points, including a connection from deep following a pass by Haymore. The duo of Anderson-Strawder and Haymore would combine for 12 points in the final quarter, working to keep the Gryphons ahead despite a late-run by the Rams that reduced the lead to three points with 51 seconds remaining. Coughlin knocked down two key free-throws with five seconds remaining to make it a two-possession game and secure the victory for Sarah Lawrence.
