Gryphons Take on DI Sacred Heart in Season-Opening Exhibition

FAIRFIELD, CONN. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team opened their 2023-24 season with a 95-51 loss against Division One Sacred Heart University. The Pioneers finished 8-8 in conference play last season but earned two wins over March Madness darling FDU in their regular season matchups.

Top Performers
  • Lucas Murray led the Gryphons with 11 points and four rebounds
  • Sophomore Eamon Kelly totaled eight points on 2-of-5 shooting from deep
  • Chris Dougherty scored seven points to go along with six rebounds and two blocks

How it Happened

The Gryphons fell behind early, as some turnovers helped the Pioneers get ahead 24-6 and give the hosts some insurance early in the contests. A ten-point swing in favor of Sarah Lawrence would reduce the lead to 10 points on the back of an Andrew Kim three-pointer and three of Murray's team-high 11 points.

The Gryphons got 22 bench points in the loss, including two late three-pointers by Mason Meyers, a sophomore from Glencoe, Illinois. The Gryphons knocked down six total shots from deep, but after a respectable 37.5% shooting from deep in the first half, SLC shot just 3-for-15 from deep in the second half, bringing their percentage down to 26.1%.

Up Next

The Gryphons will return to action on Wednesday, November 8th for their home-opener against the Coast Guard Academy. The Gryphons will take the court against the Bears at 7:00 p.m. in Bronxville, N.Y. as they open up their home slate.
