Gryphons Defeat Cyclones for Second Consecutive Victory

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team defeated the Centenary Cyclones on Saturday afternoon for their second straight victory. The Gryphons used a 25-point double-double from senior Lucas Murray and 16 points from sophomore Braden Burman to defeat the Cyclones by a score of 70-55.

Top Performers
  • Murray led all players in scoring and rebounding with his 25-point and 10-rebound effort
  • Burman returned to the team after missing the past couple of contests, scoring 16 points and shooting 57% from deep
  • Chris Dougherty flirted with a double-double, scoring eight points and pulling down nine rebounds alongside three assists

How it Happened

The Gryphons got out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to a three-point play by Murray and a layup by the senior less than a minute later. The team then benefitted from back-to-back triples by Eamon Kelly and Andrew Kim to extend their lead to nine points within the first four minutes of the contest. The Cyclones would close the gap to seven, but Burman would strike from deep, one of his four makes from long-range in the game, to give the Gryphons a ten-point lead with 14 minutes remaining before the halftime intermission. A layup by Dougherty would follow and then Burman would strike again, taking a pass from fellow sophomore Kelly and connecting from behind the arc to give SLC a 15-point advantage. The Gryphons would remain in control, extending their lead to 20 points with just under five minutes to play in the half after a three-point play by Murray. A 15-3 run by the Cyclones to close out the half would erase the once secure SLC lead and the Gryphons would find themselves up just six after a pair of made free throws by the Cyclones with 31 seconds left. Murray would score with 13 seconds remaining to bring the lead to eight and that would be the final score of the half, with SLC entering the intermission ahead by a score of 41-33.

Both teams would struggle to score in the second half, with a lone Centenary free-throw breaking the scoreless drought nearly three minutes into second-half play. Burman would strike again from deep to extend the lead to double-digits and after another lone Cyclone free-throw, the sophomore would score again with a layup underneath the basket. Murray would follow that score up with one of his own, another three-point play, this time extending the Sarah Lawrence lead to 14 points. Burman would take his turn again, connecting from long range off an assist from Dougherty before the big man got his own basket a minute later, scoring underneath after an offensive rebound. The Gryphons converted on their opportunities at the line the remainder of the way to maintain a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the half, with a John Kairouz layup giving them 70 points and securing a 70-55 victory for the Gryphons.
