Four Gryphons end in Double Figures against Bloodhounds

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team fell to John Jay by a score of 66-80 on Monday evening. The Gryphons outscored the Bloodhounds 26-9 in the final quarter of play but it would not be enough to complete a comeback.

Top Performers
  • Khailand Anderson-Strawder paced the Gryphons with career bests in points and rebounds, scoring a team-high 19 points and pulling down 12 boards
  • Colleen Coughlin scored 13 points for SLC while dishing out six assists
  • Kendall Haymore earned another double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds
  • Kaila Dorch scored 12 points for SLC with a block and a steal

How it Happened

The Bloodhounds took control of the game early and held on throughout the remainder of the contest. The hosts got 17 first-half points from Chayanne Kelly, who shot five-of-eight from deep in the first half to propel her team to a 45-27 lead by the first intermission. The Bloodhounds had amassed a 20-point lead with 28 seconds before the half but a last-second layup by Haymore off a Coughlin assist reduced the lead to 18 heading into the break, hoping to give the Gryphons some momentum for the final 20 minutes.

The third quarter started with Haymore scoring four seconds into the period and after a John Jay basket it would be Dorch to score off an assist by fellow sophomore Ariana Spanopoulos. Dorch would score again two minutes later but after her basket the Bloodhounds would score 10 straight points, a run that was finally broken by an Anderson-Strawder layup at the three-minute mark. The first-year would score twice more in the quarter, converting a three-point play and hitting a jumper in the waning seconds off a Coughlin assist, but the Bloodhounds maintained a 31-point advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

The fourth quarter saw the SLC offense begin to click, with Dorch, Anderson-Strawder, Coughlin, Haymore and Spanopoulos all tallying points in the game's final period. Dorch and Anderson-Strawder combined to score SLC's first 15 points of the half, reducing the John Jay lead to 20 points, but it would not be enough to close the gap as the Bloodhounds had built up a large enough lead. Five straight points by Coughlin reduced the margin to 17 with just over a minute left and a three-pointer by the sophomore beat the final buzzer but the hosting Bloodhounds would hold on for an 80-66 victory.
