KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Despite a valiant two-block and eight-rebound effort from
Kaila Dorch, the Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team fell to USMMA on Wednesday night by a score of 66-46. The Gryphons were faced with a tough matchup following their win against St. Joseph's College of Long Island on Monday, as they had to travel to Kings Point and take on the Mariners who sit atop the Skyline conference with a 20-2 overall record this season.
By the Numbers
- Dorch scored four points in addition to pulling down eight rebounds, blocking two shots and tallying a steal
- Colleen Coughlin continued her solid play, leading the Gryphons in scoring with 12 points and adding three assists
- Kendall Haymore added 11 points for Sarah Lawrence while grabbing seven rebounds, including four on the offensive glass
How it Happened
The Mariners jumped out to an early 8-0 lead but after two made free-throws from Coughlin and a jumper by senior
Jordyn Medina, the early USMMA lead was reduced to four points. The Mariners would hold Sarah Lawrence scoreless for the final three minutes of play to carry a 14-6 lead into the first intermission. The second quarter saw the Gryphons step up their scoring, starting with a three-point play from Haymore just 16 seconds into the quarter. The Mariners would answer that play by Haymore by extending their lead to 15 points before
Demitra Loukopoulos, Coughlin and
Kumi Tamura all scored to bring the lead back down to ten. Two layups by Lauren Hunter in the final minute of the half would put USMMA up by 14 as the first-half buzzer sounded and the Gryphons had ground to make up in the second half.
Much like the second quarter, the Gryphons played well offensively in the third, scoring 14 points once again. The Mariners would continue to score as well, as six different players made field goals in the period to help keep the team in the lead, finishing the quarter with a 16-point lead. The final quarter saw Haymore score six of her 11 points, but it would not be enough as USMMA had an answer to every score for the Gryphons. Even a late three-pointer from Coughlin would not be enough to rally past the Mariners. At the final buzzer USMMA claimed the victory by a score of 66-46
