Brand Doubles as Gryphons host Purchase Panthers

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team played host to the Purchase Panthers on Saturday afternoon for a Skyline softball doubleheader. The Panthers claimed victories in both games, the first by an 11-0 score and the second by a tally of 12-1.

By the Numbers
  • Shirin Pechefsky pitched 7.2 innings, striking out seven and walking just three batters
  • Isabella Zuniga also took the mound for the Gryphons, throwing 2.1 innings in game two
  • Anna Brand had a double in game two that would set up Ruby Tappan for an RBI ground out, resulting in Sarah Lawrence's lone run
  • Kristin Vargas led off the day with a single and a stolen base for the Gryphons

How it Happened

The Panthers and Gryphons remained close throughout the first two frames but in the third it would be Purchase to pull away thanks to a three-run third inning capped off by a sacrifice fly. The Panthers would add insurance by putting up five more runs in the next frame to remain in control.

In game two it would be a hot start for the Panthers that would give them the victory, scoring two runs in the first before exploding for six runs in the second inning and three more in the third. With an 11-0 lead, the Gryphons would get their first extra-base hit of the day when Brand connected for her two-bagger, moving Zuniga to third before Tappan would eventually bring her home after grounding out to second. That would be the only offense for the Gryphons as the Panthers would hold on to take a 12-1 victory in game two.
