First-Inning Offense Carries Gryphons over Maccabees

BRONX, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team earned their first two victories of the season in dominant fashion as they defeated the Yeshiva Maccabees by scores of 15-2 and 18-5. The Gryphons got a quality start in game one by Shirin Pechefsky and Kristin Vargas reached base in all ten of her at-bats on the day.

By the Numbers
  • Pechefsky pitched all five innings of game one, allowing just four hits and one earned run while striking out seven and forcing six groundouts
  • The aforementioned Vargas reached base ten times, including an impressive four-hit performance in game two
  • Maeve Collins joined Vargas with a four-hit game two
  • Sophie Grenke tripled in both games and accumulated five hits on the day

How it Happened

The Gryphons got out to hot starts in both games, starting the first game off with five runs in the first inning thanks to Grenke's two-RBI triple. In game two, the Gryphons would put up 12 runs before the Maccabees would have a chance to bat, due in part to Grenke's second triple of the evening as well as two-RBI doubles from both Vargas and Anna Brand. In game one, the Gryphons would not need any more offense as Pechefsky would hold Yeshiva's offense at bay, but that would not stop a five-run third inning highlighted by a two-RBI double by Isabella Zuniga, who would add another RBI in the fifth inning on an infield single. The Gryphons would hold onto the lead and take the first game by a score of 15-2, allowing just four hits.

In game two, Pechefsky would stay on the mound to start the game, continuing her solid play by allowing just one earned run on three hits in two innings. The aforementioned Zuniga would take over on the mound in the third inning and would strike out the side after coming into the game. Zuniga would allow four earned runs through the remainder of the game while bringing her final strikeout total to five batters. The offensive attack for Sarah Lawrence stayed active after their 12-run first inning, adding another four runs in the second frame after doubles by Vargas and Collins while Zuniga and Brand both singled to drive in runs. Collins would single in the third inning to add another score and Vargas would drive in the 18th and final run in the top of the fifth to keep the Gryphons securely in the lead.
