BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team opened their 2023 season with a doubleheader against John Jay on Tuesday afternoon. The Bloodhounds swept the Gryphons by scores of 21-6 and 15-0 for their tenth and eleventh wins of the season.
By the Numbers
- Shirin Pechefsky pitched seven total innings, walking only three batters and giving up only two earned runs in two innings pitched in game two
- Kristin Vargas hit a double in the first game of the doubleheader in addition to scoring twice for the Gryphons
- Isabella Zuniga reached base in all three plate appearances in game one, scoring once
How it Happened
The Gryphons fell behind early after the Bloodhounds put up five runs in the first inning, but after the first four batters reached base in the bottom of the first, the hosts would find themselves in a position to come back, eventually scoring four runs in the frame. Midway through the fourth frame, the Bloodhounds had pulled away to a 20-4 lead thanks in part to a Rylea Sandel home run that brought in Jailene Santiago. Despite the lead, the Gryphons would score twice again in the fourth as Vargas and Pechefsky would cross the plate. After five innings, the Bulldogs would claim a victory in the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 21-6.
In the second game of the day, the Gryphons would face a much taller task as John Jay's Jailene Santiago pitched five perfect innings, striking out 11 Gryphons in the effort. Zuniga and Pechefsky combined to pitch five innings for Sarah Lawrence as they walked just three batters while Zuniga forced five groundouts in her three innings pitched. The Gryphons could not get anything going offensively against Santiago as they struggled to put the ball in play against the flamethrower. The Bloodhounds would carry their six-run third inning to a 15-0 victory after five innings of play.
