Carroll Earns Win in First Game; Gryphons Dominate Lightning

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - Head Coach John Carroll led the Gryphons onto the court for the first time and the team walked out of the Campbell Sports Center with their first win of the season. The Gryphons dominated Lehman College three sets to none, winning by scores of 25-11, 25-13 and 25-12.

Top Performers
  • Athena Kazos paced the team with an impressive 13 kills, adding a service ace for a game-high 14 points
  • Mia Rector picked up right where she left off in 2022, leading all players with 19 assists
  • First-Year Tabitha Hardin Zollo tallied five service aces in addition to two assists

The Gryphons got ahead early in the first set and did not look back, building up a 7-1 lead thanks to three kills by Kazos, another by Carolyn Kelly and one of Hardin-Zollo's five service aces. After getting ahead 15-9, the Gryphons would take it to another level, scoring ten of the final 12 points in the set and turning a late-set service streak by Madelyn Heavens into a 25-11 set victory.

The second set started much closer, as the Lightning got ahead 6-5 early on, but that would be the last time they would hold a lead in the match. Sarah Lawrence would go on a 7-0 run and take a commanding 12-5 lead on the back of four Hardin-Zollo service aces. An impactful kill by first-year Milly Guemple would give the Gryphons set point and the team would take the set one rally later after a Lehman attack error.

The third and final set would start with the Gryphons jumping out to an early-set lead as well, this time by a tally of 6-2 on the back of two consecutive Kaille Ferguson service aces. The Lightning would rally to tie the set at 8-8 thanks to two service aces, but Sarah Lawrence would answer with three consecutive points, in part thanks to two Raegan Lacombe service aces. After Lehman responded with two points of their own, the Gryphons would go on their second 7-0 run of the day to bring the score to 19-10. The Lightning would bring the score to 21-12 but would not score again, instead the Gryphons would close out the set and match on a 4-0 run highlighted by a kill, service ace and assist from Claire O'Rourke on three consecutive rallies.

The Gryphons (1-0) will return to action on Tuesday, September 5th as they open Skyline play against Yeshiva University at the ARC Arena on the campus of Baruch College. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. and live stat and video links are available at gogryphons.com/sports/womens-volleyball/schedule.
