Gryphons Improve to 2-0 in Skyline with Win over Panthers

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - After three sets of play, the Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the season. The Gryphons bested Old Westbury by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-19 to remain undefeated in conference play.

Top Performers
  • Kaille Ferguson led the team in both kills and digs, with 7 of the former and eight of the latter
  • Mia Rector had another superb match for SLC, totaling 20 assists and adding two service aces

How it Happened

The Gryphons jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead that gave the impression that the set would be over quickly. The Panthers would not subscribe to that, as they would battle back and tie the set at three just a few rallies later. The two teams would remain close and the visiting Panthers would take an 11-9 lead as they absorbed any momentum that the Gryphons had to start the match. After an Old Westbury service error, the Gryphons embarked on a seven-point scoring run that would allow them to regain the lead, this time by five points. The two teams would continue their back-and-forth play but the lead was too much as the Gryphons took the set 25-18.

Old Westbury looked poised to extend the match, getting ahead 3-0 in the second set and remaining ahead 6-3 a few rallies later. The Gryphons would be the ones to battle back this time, tying the game at 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10 before jumping out to a 13-10 lead. After two straight points went the way of the visitors, the Gryphons went on a run to secure a 19-12 lead off the heels of a Skyler Kawecki-Muonio service ace. The opposition scored twice more, but Ferguson, Georgi Massey and Carolyn Kelly would all tally kills in the final five rallies as the Gryphons took a commanding two-set lead by a score of 25-14.

The third and final set was SLC's from start to end. The hosts got ahead 6-1 thanks to another kill by Kelly and would later find themselves up 13-4. The Panthers would string together a kill and three service aces to bring the gap to 15-9 but three more points by Sarah Lawrence would put them comfortably ahead 18-9. Seven of the next nine points would go to Old Westbury and the lead was brought down to just four points. After trading scores, the Gryphons held a 23-18 advantage and a service ace by Rector would give the team set- and match-point. The Panthers would delay the inevitable by one rally but a Kawecki-Muonio kill would close out the set 25-19 and give the Gryphons their second conference win of 2023.
