Gryphons Split Tri-Match; Defeat Bay Path in Three Sets

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team journeyed to John Jay on Saturday to take part in a tri-match featuring the hosting Bloodhounds and the Bay Path Wildcats. The Gryphons bested the Wildcats 3-0 in their first match of the day before falling 1-3 to the hosting Bloodhounds in the day's second match.

Top Performers
  • Athena Kazos earned a double-double in the first match with 14 kills and 12 digs
  • Tabitha Hardin Zollo totaled 28 digs on the day to lead the Gryphons
  • Mia Rector totaled 51 assists, including 35 against Bay Path in the day's first match

Game #1- 3-0 Victory over Bay Path University (26-24, 25-15, 25-20)

The Gryphons fell behind early in the first and third sets against the wildcats but fought back to take both sets. In the first set, the Gryphons fought off a late-set scoring run by the Wildcats to remain in control and eventually take the set 26-24. In the second set, Sarah Lawrence jumped ahead early thanks to three Kaille Ferguson service aces and the Gryphons would use that early lead to claim the set 25-15. The third set was a near mirror of the first, with SLC falling behind early, regaining their composure and taking the lead only to fight off a late Bay Path rally to hold on for the set victory.

Game #2- 1-3 Defeat against John Jay University (21-25, 10-25, 25-21, 17-25)

The Gryphons fell behind 9-5 to the Bloodhounds after a four-point run by the hosts, but would rally to tie the set at 16 on the back of a John Jay attack error. The two teams would find themselves tied at 18 and 19, but a three-point run by the Bloodhounds would give them the cushion they would need to eventually take the set. The second set saw the hosts take control, getting ahead 13-4 and not turning back for a 25-10 victory and a commanding two-set lead. The visiting Gryphons would not go down without a fight, getting ahead 6-1 in the third set thanks to another Ferguson service ace and a kill by Carolyn Kelly. The Bloodhounds would fight back but the Gryphons would remain in control, holding a commanding 17-10 lead as the set progressed. John Jay would close the gap with a strong finish to the set, but the Gryphons would maintain their lead and take the hosting Bloodhounds to a fourth set after a 25-21 third-set victory. The fourth and final set of the match would see the Bloodhounds get ahead 8-2 and not turn back. Despite some Sarah Lawrence kills and a Claire O'Rourke service ace, John Jay would hold on for a 25-17 fourth-set victory and take the match three sets to one.
