Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

First Years Step Up to Lead Gryphons over Bears

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball won their second straight game and their fourth in their last five contests as they defeated St. Joseph's Brooklyn by a score of 57-51.

Top Performers
  • Braden Burman led all Gryphons with 16 points and added four assists
  • Aiden Morel scored nine points for SLC while also pulling down seven rebounds and notching three steals
  • Noah Elovitz-Fields scored eight points and totaled a block and two steals on the defensive end

How it Happened

Both teams struggled to score early, with the score sitting at 9-6 in favor of the Gryphons over halfway through the first half after an Aiden Morel three-pointer. Chris Dougherty hit another triple for the Gryphons to extend the lead and a 5-1 run by SJBK's Chris Williams reduced the lead to two with just over five minutes remaining. Burman and fellow sophomore Eamon Kelly took the Gryphons on an 11-6 scoring run that brought the Gryphons a 23-18 lead at halftime.

A 9-2 run by the Bears started off the second half and erased the five-point halftime lead, giving the hosts a two-point advantage. Elovitz-Fields and Burman both scored to bring the Gryphons ahead. The two teams would trade buckets twice before the Bears got out to a five-point lead on the heels of five straight points from Alex Macheras. After a well-called timeout by Sarah Lawrence Kyle Jefferson scored from deep off a pass from John Kairouz and the sophomore-to-sophomore connection reduced the lead to two points. After a SJBK layup, scores by Elovitz-Fields and Aiden Morel gave the Gryphons a one-point lead with over eight minutes remaining. Morel would connect again from behind the arc a minute later and the Gryphons found themselves ahead by three points. After two-and-a-half minutes of scoreless basketball, the Bears would score in two straight possessions to even the score but Kairouz would strike from deep to re-assert a three-point lead before an SLC timeout. After getting the ball back, Burman would take his turn connecting from deep to give the visitors a two-possession lead. SJBK would score the game's next four points to bring the lead down to two, but a Burman layup with just over a minute-and-a-half would bring the lead to four and put the Gryphons in control. The Bears would not find success from the field and two late-game free-throws by Andrew Kim sealed the victory for SLC.
