Haymore's 20-20 Game Leads SLC over SJBK in Skyline Nail-Biter

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team used a sizable advantage on the boards to defeat St. Joseph's Brooklyn by a score of 59-55 and sweep the season series against the Bears while improving to 6-7 in Skyline contests.

Top Performers
  • Kendall Haymore led the way with a 22-point and 23-rebound effort, connecting on 12 of her 14 attempts from the free-throw line
  • Colleen Coughlin struck from deep five times en route to an 18-point performance
  • Khailand Anderson-Strawder scored 13 points while pulling down 16 rebounds in the winning effort

How it Happened

The two teams played each other tight early in the game, with the Gryphons using a Grace Carter layup to eventually take an 8-5 lead with just over six-and-a-half minutes remaining. An 8-0 run for the Bears capped by a Kristen Donovan triple gave the visitors a five-point advantage but one of Coughlin's five three-pointers would answer the run and keep the Gryphons within striking distance. After an SJBK jumper, Coughlin would once again find the bottom of the net, making it a one-point game with two minutes left in the first quarter. Two of Haymore's 12 made free-throws would round out the quarter and with eight seconds remaining the senior put the Gryphons ahead by one after 10 minutes of play.

The second quarter started off slow for both teams, with a Christina Reilly jumper marking the only scoring for either team in the first three minutes of play. An ensuing 7-3 run by SLC capped by back-to-back Anderson-Strawder jumpers gave the Gryphons a seven-point lead but an answer from Destiny Hurt and a basket by Mercedes Perez just over a minute later reduced the lead to three. Haymore and Anderson-Strawder would both score in the final minutes of the period but another score by Hurt with 20 seconds remaining in the half reduced the Sarah Lawrence lead to just one point at the intermission.

Haymore picked up right where she left off in the first half, opening the second-half scoring after Coughlin found her underneath the basket. The Bears would not go away, taking the next four points to claim a 32-31 lead less than a minute into the second half. The two teams would alternate taking the lead throughout the whole period, but with under a minute remaining it would be the visitors to get ahead by two possessions, until a late-quarter free-throw from Haymore brought the score to 45-42 in favor of SJBK with one quarter left to play.

The Bears then scored first after the break, extending their lead to five but scores by Reilly and Anderson-Strawder would tie the contest at 47 with 7:44 remaining. SJBK's Hurt would strike again to take the lead, scoring off a steal to give the Bears a two-point lead a minute later. Coughlin would then hit what was at the time her biggest shot of the day, taking a pass from Reilly and connecting from long range to give the Gryphons a one-point lead and an immediate answer to Hurt's score just 11 seconds earlier. Hurt would strike again but in an eerily similar fashion Coughlin would connect again from deep, one-upping her previous basket and marking the final lead change of the contest. After a miss by the Bears, Haymore converted after receiving a pass from sophomore Ariana Spanopoulos to build up a three-point lead for Sarah Lawrence. Two made free-throws by Haymore on the following SLC possession increased the lead to five, but the Bears would then reduce the lead to three with 1:01 remaining. The scoring would then stop until an SLC free-throw with eight seconds, and a second make by Haymore would put the game out of reach and secure a victory for the Gryphons.
