Kelly and Gryphons Take Down Division-Leading Panthers

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's team defeated the Purchase College Panthers on Saturday afternoon, giving the hosting Panthers their first loss in Skyline play this season by a score of 78-72.
  • Eamon Kelly led all scorers with a game-high 25 points while adding two steals on the defensive end
  • Senior Lucas Murray scored 15 points while pulling down a team-high nine rebounds
  • Dean Furlong was the third Gryphons in double figures, scoring a career-best 10 points in addition to an impressive five assists
How it Happened

The Gryphons fell behind early but would quickly get back into the game, using an Eamon Kelly triple to tie the contest at nine points apiece before a ten-point run by the Panthers reasserted the home team's lead. A Kyle Jefferson layup stopped the scoring streak, but the hosts would hold a ten-point advantage with eight minutes remaining in the half. Nine points combined from Furlong and John Kairouz led a three-minute run that ended with SLC in the lead and five minutes remaining in the first half. Kelly and Braden Burman would join in on the scoring effort, helping the Gryphons remain ahead and take a seven-point lead into the intermission.

The Panthers reduced the lead to three within the first two minutes of the second half, but a Chris Dougherty three-pointer re-extended the Sarah Lawrence advantage. The lead would once again be reduced but a Murray free throw and a Kelly triple helped the Gryphons stay ahead. A Furlong three-pointer less than a minute later re-asserted a double-digit lead for the Gryphons that they would hold until the 11-minute mark. Back-to-back Purchase triples and a consequent jumper reduced the lead to five points with under ten minutes remaining. The Gryphons remained ahead, but six straight points by Purchase's Oliver Culliton made it a three point game with just under six minutes remaining. Murray, Dougherty and Burman all scored to re-assert a double-digit lead, but a Purchase score brought the lead down to seven with under two minutes. Despite the late-game resurgence, the Gryphons were solid enough from the line to hold their lead and ultimately take home a six-point victory.
