Dorch's Double-Double Leads Women's Basketball over Cedar Crest

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team used a strong first half to take down the Falcons of Cedar Crest by a score of 64-56. The Gryphons took a 37-21 lead into the half and held on for an eight-point victory.

Notable Performers
  • Kaila Dorch put up a game-high 17 points and added a team-high 10 rebounds in the winning effort
  • Colleen Coughlin connected from deep three times and totaled 15 points in the win
  • First Year Audrey Mattison hit four triples for 12 points while adding in three assists
How it Happened

The Gryphons used a strong first quarter on both sides of the ball to get ahead of the Falcons, striking from long range four times, including a Mattison triple in the final seconds of the period, her third of the quarter. An early three-pointer in the second quarter by Ariana Spanopoulos and a Gabby Hudson layup on the ensuing SLC possession gave the team a 10-point lead before Mattison struck once again, extending the lead to 13 with six minutes remaining in the half. Hudson and Dorch would combine to score SLC's final 10 points of the half as the team took a 16-point advantage into the intermission.

The third quarter would see both teams struggle offensively, with a Coughlin jumper the only score for over four-and-a-half minutes. A minute later the Gryphons would still hold a seventeen-point lead following another score by Dorch. Following the made layup, the Falcons would score eight points to reduce the lead to nine points with just over a minute-and-a-half remaining. A made free throw by Hudson and another Coughlin jumper would bring the lead back to 12 with 23 seconds remaining in the period. A last-second make by Cedar Crest's Maliya Gonzalez would make it a ten-point game as the teams entered the final quarter of play. Gonzalez would once again be called on to open the final quarter, connecting from deep to bring the SLC lead down to seven points. Mattison would then find fellow first year Kendall Stephens for a layup to keep the Gryphons comfortably ahead. After a single made free throw by the visitors, Coughlin would hit her biggest three of the day, once again off a Mattison assist, to bring the lead back to double-digits. A layup by Dorch and Coughlin's final three of the night would keep the Gryphons up by double-digits, and late layups by Dorch would help secure the victory despite a late run by the Falcons.
