Women's Basketball uses Dominant Second Half to Fuel Victory in Skyline Opener

WESTBURY, N.Y.  - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team opened their 2024-25 Skyline schedule with a dominant win over the Panthers of Old Westbury thanks to a strong second half that saw them outscore the hosting Panthers 43-24.

Notable Performers
  • Kaila Dorch notched another double-double, scoring a team-high 16 points and adding 11 rebounds
  • Colleen Coughlin and Gabby Hudson each flirted with a triple double, with Coughlin putting up 12 points, 13 rebounds and six assists and Hudson totaling 15, 7 and 7
  • Audrey Mattison scored 11 points for SLC on a trio of long-range connections, adding in six assists

How it Happened

The Gryphons used connections from deep to take a first-quarter lead, as Coughlin, Ariana Spanopoulos and Christina Reilly all delivered from long range and the visitors led 18-12 at the first intermission. The second quarter would go to the Panthers, as four Gladys Pierre points, a layup by Dorch and triples by both Coughlin and Mattison would be SLC's only scores, with the hosts regaining a lead at the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the Gryphons would come out firing, with another triple from Mattison opening the period's scoring before a layup by Dorch thanks to a Hudson assist gave the Gryphons the lead once again. A triple by the hosts would put the score in their favor once again, but an immediate response by Mattison brought the Gryphons back on top. Hudson would score on the next two SLC possessions on the fast break, later tacking on a pair of made free throws to extend the lead to eight points. The team then scored their final eight points of the period in the paint, taking a five-point advantage into the final quarter. The fourth quarter saw SLC pile it on, with a Coughlin triple starting off the quarter and four straight points by Hudson giving the team a double-digit lead for the first time all night. After an OW score, two Dorch putbacks and a pair of triples by Hudson and Coughlin extended the lead to 20 points, putting the Gryphons on top with a commanding lead. Dorch added in two more late-quarter scores as the Gryphons returned to Bronxville with a 16-point conference win on their resume.
