Women's Basketball Mounts Furious Second-Half Comeback against Bryn Mawr

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team wrapped up a busy Saturday at the Campbell Sports Center with a 57-73 loss to Bryn Mawr. The Gryphons fell behind by 19 points at the half before reducing the lead to just four points in the fourth quarter.

Notable Performers
  • Junior Kaila Dorch led the Gryphons in scoring with 24 points, adding in eight rebounds, five steals and two blocks
  • Gabby Hudson added in 16 points for SLC along with a steal and six rebounds

How it Happened

The Gryphons and Owls remained close at the onset, finding themselves tied at five points apiece three minutes into the contest. From that point, the visitors would score eight straight and 18 of the next 20 total points to build a 16-point advantage. After making one shot each by the line, Dorch and Kendall Stephens helped to slightly narrow the gap, but it was a layup by Hudson, off a pass from Emrie Pedraza, that brought the lead down to 12 before the first 10 minutes concluded. The second quarter would be dominated by the Owls, with a triple from Pedraza seven minutes into the period and a last-minute three-point play by Dorch serving as the highlights as the Gryphons fell behind 39-20 at the intermission.

The third quarter saw the Gryphons make up a bit of ground as both offenses were clicking. Back-to-back scores by Dorch and Peraza opened the half before Hudson scored five straight points to reduce the lead to 12. Three-pointers by Ariana Spanopoulos and Audrey Mattison kept the Gryphons close along with another three-point play for Dorch, but the hosts still trailed by 14 at the end of the third quarter. Mattison's triple to end the third was the kick start that the Gryphons needed, catalyzing a 13-0 run fully fueled by Hudson and Dorch. The former would find the latter for a layup with just over seven minutes remaining to reduce the Bryn Mawr lead to four, but two answers by the Owls made it an eight-point game less than a minute later. Dorch would add on four more points but the Gryphons would not be able to do much more offensively as the Owls closed the game out on a 13-4 run to advance to Sunday's Gryphon Invitational Championship Game against the Marywood Pacers.
