Men's Basketball takes on Division I Columbia in NYC Exhibition Matchup

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team traveled into NYC on Monday night as they took on the Lions of Columbia University in an exhibition matchup. The Gryphons and Lions met last year and this marked the third straight season that SLC has played a Division I opponent.

Notable Performers
  • Junior guard Mason Meyers led the team with 11 points, connecting on three of his four shots from deep
  • Peter Fathi and Gavin Wright both scored twice from deep, with Fathi grabbing a steal and Wright swiping two
  • Noah Elovitz-Fields pulled down a pair of offensive boards, assisted two teammates and scored in the exhibition

How it Happened

Eamon Kelly and Andrew Kim scored early for the Gryphons, before a pair of layups by John Kairouz came off assists from Aiden Morel and Lemar Fulmore Jr. A Derek Hickman jumper and a triple by Kelly of an Andrew Kim pass was followed up by one of Wright's two long-range connections and the Gryphons trailed 17-27 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. The only field goal by the visitors for the remainder of the half would be a Fulmore Jr. jumper and the Lions would take a 39-19 lead into the halftime break.

The Lions controlled the game early in the second half, with Braden Burman finally breaking SLC's scoreless drought with a jumper after four-and-a-half minutes of play. A three-point play by Fulmore Jr. and Wright's second triple of the day would give the Gryphons 27 points with 10 minutes left to play. With 5:54 remaining, Elovitz-Fields would score his lone basket of the day, followed by Fathi's first triple and his second just 30 seconds later. Meyers would then connect on a triple with 4:12 remaining for his first score of the game, hitting again from deep with just over two minutes remaining before a layup with 54 seconds left gave him a career-high eight points. The Gryphons would struggle to score in the final minute, until Meyers struck again from deep with eight seconds remaining for his third three-pointer of the evening and a team-high 11 points.
