Gryphons Take Early Lead against USMMA

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team got out to a hot start on Saturday, taking a 24-14 lead after the first quarter but ultimately falling to the Mariners of USMMA by a score of 66-58.

Top Performers
  • Kendall Haymore scored a game-high 23 points while also pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds
  • Khailand Anderson-Strawder scored 20 points for SLC while also recording a block on the defensive end
  • Colleen Coughlin scored 13 points for the Gryphons while also totaling four assists and two blocks

How it Happened

After slightly falling behind early, the Gryphons got a three-pointer from Coughlin and an ensuing three-point play by Anderson-Strawder to get out to an early lead. After a 12-4 advantage, the Gryphons extended their lead thanks to scores by Anderson-Strawder, Coughlin and Haymore, with an Anderson-Strawder triple giving the Gryphons a 22-10 lead with under two minutes remaining in the first quarter. USMMA's Emily Grasseler would score twice in the final minutes to bring the Mariners closer, but two Coughlin free throws would re-assert a double-digit Sarah Lawrence lead heading into the second quarter of play. The second quarter would see the Gryphons maintain their lead, using a pair of made free throws by Haymore and a triple by Coughlin to stay ahead by double-digits, followed by a layup by former, which gave SLC a 13-point lead. A five-point run to end the quarter brought the Mariners within eight points at the half, gaining ground on the Gryphons with 20 minutes to play.

Haymore scored the first four points of the second half to bring the SLC lead up to 12 points, and the Gryphons would continue to maintain their lead, with Anderson-Strawder scoring on the next three SLC possessions to keep the lead in double-digits. With a 42-29 lead just before the halfway point of the period, the Gryphons looked poised to upset the Mariners, but USMMA would score the game's next 12 points to reduce the lead to just one point. Anderson-Strawder would answer the call and connect from deep to re-extend the lead to four points, but the Mariners would stay on the heels of SLC, making two last-minute free throws to reduce the lead to three points by the end of the quarter. After another Haymore layup to open the quarter, the Mariners took six straight points to claim a slight lead, but SLC's senior forward would score again to reclaim a brief lead for the Gryphons. With 5:55 left, USMMA would score to take the lead once again, but this time they would not surrender their advantage. Multiple scores by Haymore reduced the lead to one point, but the Mariners always had an answer, keeping ahead for the remainder of the quarter before eventually claiming a 66-58 victory over the Gryphons.
