Gryphons Celebrate Murray before Senior Day Matchup with Valiants

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team celebrated senior day on Saturday prior to their matchup with Manhattanville at the Campbell Sports Center. The team honored senior Lucas Murray before falling to the Valiants in their regular-season finale. The Gryphons will compete on the road in the Skyline tournament quarterfinals next Tuesday, with the bracket to be set on Sunday, February 18th.

Top Performers
  • Senior Lucas Murray scored 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds, including his 500th career board, one of just six players in program history to reach that total
  • Eamon Kelly added 17 points as well for SLC, knocking down four three-pointers to set the single-season record for three-pointers made
  • Andrew Kim scored 14 points on 50% shooting while also distributing five assists to set the program's single-season best mark with 108 so far this season

How it Happened

The Gryphons got out to an early advantage, using an 11-0 run to build a nine-point lead that featured two scores each by Kelly and Kim, with both connecting from deep at least once. A Manhattanville answer would come via an Andrew St. Louis triple, but Murray would step up on senior day with an answer from the paint. Two Manhattanville triples would follow an SLC turnover and with 13 minutes remaining in the half, the Valiants had cut the lead down to just two points. Dean Furlong would take his turn next for the Gryphons, taking a pass from Kim and stepping into a shot from beyond the arc to re-extend the lead. After a Chris Dougherty score, the Valiants scored seven straight points, punctuated by a Tommy Lotito triple that tied the contest at 18 with under eight minutes remaining. Murray would go one-for-two from the line to give the Gryphons the lead once again, but a St. Louis jumper would be followed up by a triple by the guard and teammate Tony Hastings would follow suit to give the Valiants their first lead since a minute into the game as the visitors got ahead 26-19 before an SLC timeout. Coming out of the break, the Gryphons got Dougherty to the line, where he knocked down both opportunities only to be answered by a Manhattanville score. A triple by Kelly and a score inside by Murray would keep the Gryphons close down the stretch, but the Valiants got to the line four times within the final minutes of the quarter, knocking down all seven of their shots from the stripe to build up a lead and take a 41-31 lead into the half.

Kelly stepped up at the onset of the second half, scoring the first five points of the period by himself to reduce the gap to five. John Kairouz would score in the paint four minutes into the half to bring the score to 41-38 and make it a one-possession game. The Gryphons answered each Valiant basket for a stretch, but a 9-2 run by the Valiants punctuated by a fastbreak layup gave the visitors a double-digit lead with seven minutes remaining. A three-point play by Braden Burman with six minutes remaining would close the gap to 10 points, but an immediate answer from deep by the Valiants would keep the Gryphons in need of a comeback. Despite late-game free throws and a triple by Kim, the Valiants would maintain their double-digit lead through the end of the game to clinch a home playoff game in next week's conference tournament.
