Gryphons Stage Late-Game Comeback to Topple Maccabees in Bronxville

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team defeated division-leading Yeshiva University on Wednesday night at the Campbell Sports Center by a score of 77-73 after staging a late-game comeback to stun the Maccabees. The Gryphons have now won three straight contests and currently sit as the fourth seed in the Skyline tournament with three games in the regular season.

Top Performers
  • Eamon Kelly scored 18 points for SLC, connecting three times from deep and adding seven assists
  • Braden Burman also scored 18 points, adding in six assists and totaling three steals
  • First-Year Aiden Morel played 30 minutes off the bench, scoring 12 points while distributing five assists and pulling down seven rebounds. He also added two blocks and a steal on the defensive end

How it Happened

A hot start from deep gave the Maccabees an early lead, as the visitors connected twice from deep in the first two minutes of the contest to claim a 6-0 lead. The Gryphons then answered with a triple of their own, as Morel found Burman for a triple to kick off the scoring for SLC. The Maccabees took the next five points to claim an 11-6 lead, and what seemed to be a run-killing triple from Kelly was immediately answered by a connection from deep off the hands of Yeshiva's Roy Itcovichi. The Gryphons remained relentless, with Morel stepping up and connecting from long-range three times in the next one-and-a-half minutes to eventually tie the contest at 17 points apiece. One made free throw and a three-pointer from the Maccabees saw the visitors begin to pull away but a beautiful fadeaway jumper by Dean Furlong on the left side and an ensuing made free-throw to make it a three-point play brought the Gryphons back within one. Another triple would be answered by a Burman jumper and on the next SLC possession Furlong would find Kelly for a triple that would give SLC a one-point lead. Once again the Maccabees would find an immediate answer, with Zevi Samet, the conference's leading scorer, connecting from deep before knocking down two free throws to return the lead to the Maccabees. The Gryphons would reduce the lead to one point multiple times throughout the final four minutes of play, but a last-second layup by Yoav Oselka gave the visitors a four-point halftime advantage.

A Derek Hickman dunk opened the scoring in the second half, but it would be the Maccabees to go on a scoring run, scoring the next 11 points to claim a 13-point lead with 15 minutes to play. Morel would find teammates John Kairouz for a jumper to end the run and with 14 minutes remaining, the Gryphons began to make ground on Yeshiva's double-digit lead. Burman would be the next to score, off an assist from Kelly, then they would trade places as Burman found his fellow sophomore for a triple to reduce the lead to just six points. Another YU three-pointer and an immediate timeout by the Maccabees halted SLC's momentum, but Burman once again stepped up to answer the call, connecting from the field to reduce the lead. The lead would slowly grow back to eleven points with just under six-and-a-half minutes remaining but Morel would connect on his fourth triple of the night to halt the run and bring the lead back down to single digits. A pair of YU free throws grew the lead to 10 once again, and with 5:48 remaining, the Gryphons had to make a run to close the gap.

A layup by Murray would be a great start, and Hickman would score from the paint in the next possession as well. A YU layup would answer, but Burman would hit again, scoring from deep off an assist by Kelly to reduce the lead to five. Hickman and Murray would both step up to the line and knock down a single shot, bringing the lead down to just three points with 2:44 remaining. On the ensuing possession, Kelly would strip the conference's leading scorer, Samet, and Murray would bully his way inside, scoring through multiple YU defenders to bring the lead down to one point. Samet would be the one to step up for YU, driving to the hoop only to be met by Morel, who stuffed the driver and recovered the ball to give the Gryphons a chance to take the lead. After an offensive rebound by Hickman, Kelly once again found his sophomore counterpart in Burman, who drove to the hoop and finished to give the Gryphons a one-point lead with 1:06 remaining, their first lead since the seven-and-a-half minute mark of the first half. A YU layup with 56 seconds remaining would be good after a goaltending call on the Gryphons, with the lead returning to the visitors with under a minute left to play. With the game on the line, SLC would turn to their lone senior, Murray, who would score underneath once again to help take the lead. After a missed attempt by the Maccabees, none other than Murray would grab the rebound and after being fouled he would connect on both attempts from the line to make it a three-point game. A long-range attempt by Samet on the ensuing YU possession would come up empty and Kelly would connect on one-of-two shots from the line to make it a four-point game. A last-second heave by the Maccabees did not ring true and the Gryphons emerged victorious, slotting themselves into the league's number four seed with a week-and-a-half remaining in the season.
