Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women's Volleyball Welcomes Regis to Bronxville on Friday

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team fell to the Regis College Pride on Friday night in three sets. The Gryphons took on the Pride on Friday night before welcoming Lehman College and Emmanuel College to Bronxville for a tri-match on Saturday.

Notable Performers
  • Nikolet Vataj led the team with nine kills, adding in seven digs and a pair of service aces
  • Valerie Hertig tallied 13 assists, two kills and two service aces for the Gryphons
  • Athena Kazos was tied for the team lead in digs with 11 and totaled five service aces as well

How it Happened

The first set started with the Pride in control, taking an 8-4 lead and threatening to pull away after taking six of seven points. The Gryphons would rally back to tie the set at 12-12 before a 7-1 run by the visitors allowed them to grab a 19-13 lead. Kazos, Vataj and Kaille Ferguson would all tally kills in the final stretch of the set, but it would not be enough as the Pride surged late to take a 25-18 first-set victory.

The second set would see the Gryphons start hot, taking the first five points of the set thanks to a pair of Hertig service aces, a pair of kills by Vataj and a huge Georgi Massey/Jenna Lehnhart double block. After an early timeout, Regis would go on a run of their own, using a pair of aces to take the following five points and tie the set at 5-5. A mid-set run by SLC helped swing the set in their favor, taking a 12-7 lead in part due to a pair of kills by Massey. The Pride would take their turn following the SLC run, taking 10 straight points and 13 of 14, eventually claiming a 20-13 lead. SLC would take three straight but it would be the Pride once again to answer with a longer run, taking five points and sealing the set with an ace to defeat the Gryphons 25-16 and move to a potential match-clinching third set.

The third set would be a back-and-forth affair throughout, with the two teams keeping eachother close while exchanging scoring runs throughout the set. The Pride would pull away first, claiming a 13-6 lead early, but the Gryphons would respond with a five-point run of their own fueled by a trio of service aces by Kazos. Despite closing the gap, the Pride would remain ahead throughout the remainder of the set, overcoming late kills by Massey and Hertig to close out the set with a 25-20 victory and take the match three sets to none.
