Women's Volleyball Splits Home Tri-Match; Defeats Lightning in Straight Sets

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team split their tri-match on Saturday, kicking off the day with an impressive 3-0 victory over the Lehman Lightning before falling 0-3 to the Emmanuel Saints. The Gryphons and Saints played to 30 points in the second set of their match before the Saints eventually claimed a 30-28 victory.

Notable Performers
  • Nikolet Vataj stepped up to lead SLC offensively, totaling 20 kills on the day and adding in three aces and nine digs
  • Valerie Hertig continued to lead the Gryphons in assists, with 31 total on the day in addition to 10 digs and a pair of aces
  • Georgi Massey racked up five service aces against Lehman and a pair of block assists against the Saints
  • Kaille Ferguson's 16 digs against the Saints was a team-high

Match 1: Sarah Lawrence defeats Lehman 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-19)

The Gryphons were in control for what seemed like the entirety of the match, with Hertig finding Vataj for kills at pivotal moments and allowing Massey, Milly Guemple and others to build runs and keep the Gryphons ahead of the Lightning. The first set would be a group effort, with a Hertig/Carolyn Kelly double block and a kill by Kelly helping get the Gryphons ahead by a sizable 11-6 lead. After a Lehman score, an 11-2 SLC run would ensue that would see everyone get involved, as Vataj, Kelly, Guemple, Hertig and Jenna Lehnhart all registered kills to help SLC take a 22-9 lead. A trio of Lehman errors would wrap up the set and give the Gryphons a decisive first-set victory. The second set with start with a bit of a run by the Lightning but a 9-1 SLC run headlined by a quartet of kills by Vataj would get the Gryphons back in the set and eventually bring them an 11-6 lead for the second straight set. An Eva Anderson serving streak a few rallies later would extend the lead to 18-8 as the first year would register one of her three service aces on the day. Guemple and Vataj would each register a pair of kills down the stretch from setter Ava Castro-Devarona as the Gryphons secured a 25-14 second-set victory. The third and final set would see even more Gryphons get involved, as Kali Gethers earned a kill of their own early in the set and Anderson earned herself another service ace to give SLC a 10-5 advantage. The Lightning would take the next five points to tie the set, but an answer was imminent from the Gryphons, who would use a trio of kills by Vataj and a pair of service aces by Eve Iceton to assert themselves with an 18-10 lead. Another pair of kills by Vataj and one from Alex Pantoliano would help the Gryphons hang on for a 25-19 victory and allow them to take the match against the Lightning.

Match 2: Emmanuel defeats Sarah Lawrence (25-6, 30-28, 25-17)

The first set was fully dominated by the Saints, as the Gryphons got an early service ace by Hertig and lone kills from Guemple and Vataj, but were otherwise unable to get anything going offensively and fell 25-6. The second set was a much different story, with Sarah Lawrence battling the Saints and refusing to go down similar to the first set. The Gryphons used an early pair of kills by Massey and contributions from Pantoliano and Kelly to build a 12-10 lead partway through the set. The Saints would respond by taking five consecutive rallies and claiming a 15-12 lead over the hosts. An Emmanuel error and a Massey/Kelly double block would bring the Gryphons back within one and the teams would return to going back-and-forth, eventually finding themselves knotted up at 22 points apiece. Two straight Emmanuel kills would give them set point, but an error would give the Gryphons a chance, with Lehnhart stepping up and tying the set with a kill before Vataj did the same to give SLC their first set point of the match. The teams would go back and forth, with each having at least one more opportunity at match point, but despite two more Vataj kills down the stretch, an Amber Hong kill would secure the set for the Saints by a score of 30-28, a much different outcome than the first. The third set was lining up to be similar to the second, with a Lehnhart kill giving SLC a 3-2 lead early before a five-point run by the visitors returned the score to their favour. A four-point run by the Gryphons headlined by another Massey/Kelly block and a Hertig service ace would narrow the gap to three, but the Saints would manage to keep their distance, using brief stretches to stay ahead of the hosts. Massey and Pantoliano would register kills in the later stage of the set, with the latter making multiple tough digs throughout, but the Saints would keep their lead and a Frances Ramos Rodriguez kill would seal the 25-17 set victory and a 3-0 match win for the visitors.
