Dominant All-Around Performance leads Men's Basketball over Dolphins at Home

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team shot 48.1% from long range en route to a 65-43 victory over the UMSV Dolphins on Saturday afternoon. The Gryphons got contributions from up and down the roster as they cruised to the 22-point win.

Notable Performers
  • Chris Dougherty made an impact on both sides of the court, scoring eight points, pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds and blocking six shots
  • Braden Burman scored a game-high 14 points, shooting 3-for-4 from three-point range
  • Dean Furlong scored 11 points while grabbing five rebounds

How it Happened

The Gryphons set the tone early, with a Burman triple kicking off the day's scoring followed up by an Andrew Kim layup thanks to an assist from Dougherty. The Dolphins stuck around early, using key scores by Josiah Basket to keep the gap close before eventually taking a 10-8 lead thanks to a long-range connection by Basket. After a lone UMSV free-throw, the teams would exchange empty possessions before the first of two back-to-back triples by Aiden Morel, tying the game with the first and giving SLC the lead back with the second. A minute later, Dougherty would go to work on the boards, grabbing two offensive rebounds before finding Kim for an open three that extended the lead to two possessions and forced a timeout by the Dolphins. After the pause, the visitors reduced the lead to two points by the six-minute mark, but an ensuing 8-0 run by the Gryphons was fueled by Furlong, scoring twice on his own and finding Burman for a score inside, giving the hosts a double-digit advantage and forcing another timeout by UMSV coach James Mooney. The Dolphins wrapped up the half by scoring twice in the final 65 seconds, but a triple by Kim in the final seconds sent the Gryphons into the half with momentum, and a nine-point lead, on their side.

The second half was dominated by the Gryphons, holding the Dolphins under 30% from the field in the period and just three triples, while converting on 50% of their own shots from long range. Furlong, Dougherty, Kelly, Burman and Thomas Matonti all contributed multiple scores in the period, while Dougherty swatted four of his six shots in the half. Kim continued to influence the game as a distributor, joining teammate Lemar Fulmore Jr. with four assists in the half as the team built up a comfortable lead. With 12:59 remaining, a UMSV triple closed the gap to 10 and threatened to close the gap, but SLC triples on three of the next four SLC possessions via Matonti, Kelly and Matonti again gave the team a 19-point cushion. The Gryphons answered nearly every Dolphin score, with Kelly, Furlong and Burman all connecting from deep in the waning minutes to hold off any chance of a rally from the visitors, securing the team's fourth straight win.
