First-Year Duo Shines Offensively against Top-Ranked Mariners

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team got 28 points from first years Emrie Pedraza and Audrey Mattison as they hosted the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Thursday night. The Mariners took down the Gryphons 36-72 to remain undefeated in Skyline play.

Notable Performers
  • Mattison sunk four triples en route to 14 points, adding in a pair of assists
  • Pedraza added six rebounds and three assists to her 14-point effort
  • Kaila Dorch scored five points while pulling down a team-high 10 rebounds

How it Happened

After an Ariana Spanopoulos steal on the opening tip-off, the junior found Mattison for a quick triple, giving SLC an early advantage. Five unanswered USMMA points would give the visitors the lead, but Pedraza would take her turn stepping into a long-range connection, setting the tone for the rest of the game. The Mariners would take over from that point on, showing why they came into the matchup 9-0 in conference contests. A pair of triples on their next two possessions and a pair of made free throws gave them a seven-point lead, but the Gryphons would not go away just yet. Pedraza stepped up again for SLC, stepping into her second basket of the game to reduce the lead to four. Six straight USMMA points in response would open up a double-digit lead for the visitors before a last-minute score from Dorch stopped the run. The Mariners regained the momentum as time expired, getting a basket from Breanna Sommers to beat the first-quarter buzzer and return the lead to double-digits.

The Mariners broke the game open in the second quarter, as Emily Grasseler scored the first ten points of the period, extending the lead to 31-11. The Mariners would not stop there, scoring six more for an 18-0 run to lead 37-11 and keep the Gryphons off the board for the first seven minutes of the period. Pedraza found Mattison to end the run with her second triple of the half, but an immediate response by the Mariners halted any momentum. The next SLC possession saw Pedraza take her turn, taking a pass from Mattison and striking from deep for her third score of the half, but the Mariners would score the final five points of the half and take a comfortable lead into the intermission.

The third quarter was highlighted by a three-point play by Pedraza, a Spanopoulos triple and another long-range connection by Mattison, but the Mariners would hold steady, using a last-second three to enter the final ten minutes of play with a hefty advantage. The final quarter saw the first-year connection strike again for SLC, this time with Mattison being the recipient of a Pedraza pass that ended in three points for the Gryphons. The duo would not have enough to bridge the gap built up by the Mariners and the visitors would head back to Kings Point with their tenth conference win of the season, remaining atop the Skyline with an unblemished record.
