Men's Basketball Holds of Late Surge for Sixth Skyline Win of the Season

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team led for over 30 minutes as they earned their sixth conference victory of the season on Tuesday night, taking down the Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's Long Island by a score of 70-65.

Notable Performers
  • Braden Burman scored a team-high 17 points, including a pair of key free throws late in the game to keep the Gryphons on top
  • Lemar Fulmore Jr. scored 11 points and distributed five assists, including four late free throws of his own to help SLC to their sixth Skyline win
  • Eamon Kelly scored 13 points, including 10 in the first half to put the Gryphons up by eight at the halftime intermission

How it Happened

The hosts took advantage of playing on their home court, scoring nine of the first 11 points and forcing an SLC timeout with 17 minutes to play. After an empty possession by the Gryphons, Chris Dougherty came up with a steal, leading to a Burman bucket in transition and halting the run. Dougherty would then be the recipient of the first of Fulmore Jr.'s assists, scoring to cut the lead to three. After two straight turnovers by SJLI, the Gryphons crashed the offensive boards, grabbing three offensive rebounds before Kelly found Dean Furlong for a game-tying triple. Another empty SJLI possession gave the Gryphons a chance to take the lead and two more offensive boards for SLC led to a score by Kelly, forcing a timeout by the hosts as the Gryphons took the lead for the first time. After the break, the Golden Eagles would go on their own offensive rebounding streak, eventually cashing in on a jumper to tie the game. SLC junior Kyle Jefferson would break the tie by going 2-for-2 at the line and Kelly would hit his first triple of the night to give the team a two-possession lead. The hosts would attempt to answer, but Kelly would respond multiple times to keep the Gryphons ahead before Dougherty struck from deep to open up a five-point lead. Fulmore Jr. would follow suit and Thomas Matonti would do so twice in the waning minutes of the half, building up an eight-point lead by the halftime break.

The second half started exactly how the first ended, as Kelly connected from deep to keep the Gryphons rolling. A score by Andrew Kim and two free throws by Fulmore Jr. would open up a 14-point lead for SLC as the Gryphons threatened to run away with the game. SJLI's Anthony Todd would step up and score the next six points of the game, cutting the lead to eight points and bringing the home team back into the contest. Fulmore Jr. would stop the run with a jumper and the Gryphons would continue to answer each SJLI score. A huge triple by Kim would stop a run from forming with under 12 minutes remaining, and long-range scores by John Kairouz and Burman would do the same at the 10- and 9-minute marks respectively. A three-point play by Todd would cut the lead to seven with just under eight to play, but Burman would once again stop the bleeding, keeping the Gryphons ahead by multiple possessions. SJLI's AJ Esposito would take his turn, going on a five-point run to cut the lead to just four points with under six to play, but once again it was deja vu for the Golden Eagles as Burman stepped into a triple to stop the run.

Fulmore Jr. would hit important free throws down the stretch, keeping the Gryphons ahead by three possessions, but a five-point run in the final minutes closed the gap to just three points with 30 seconds to play. Dougherty connected on a lone free throw to make it a four-point game, but the Golden Eagles would close the gap to two on their ensuing possession. The Gryphons would squander the change to make it a two-possession game, but a huge block by Dougherty with 10 seconds remaining would shut down SJLI's Esposito and send Burman to the line to put the game out of reach. The junior converted on both shots to extend the lead to four points and send the Gryphons back to Bronxville with their tenth win of the season.
