Women's Basketball Wraps Up Season Series with Valiants in Bronxville

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team fell to the Valiants of Manhattanville University on Wednesday night, as the Valiants moved to 11-4 and 8-3 in conference play, continuing their strong season. The Gryphons will return to action on Saturday as they cap off a Sarah Lawrence basketball doubleheader.

Notable Performers
  • Kaila Dorch scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds while blocking a pair of shots for the Gryphons
  • Josie Kent continued her strong play on the boards, pulling down six in the contest

How it Happened

Sarah Lawrence started the game with an early spark, as Dorch won the opening jump ball, setting the tone for the Gryphons. Dorch then capitalized quickly with a strong second-chance layup to put Sarah Lawrence on the board, giving the team an early 2-0 lead. Throughout the first half, the Gryphons worked hard defensively, with both Dorch and Kendall Stephens registering blocks in the second quarter. First Year Emrie Pedraza would join in on the defensive effort, grabbing a steal later in the period to abruptly end a Manhattanville possession. In the second half, the Gryphons found a rhythm offensively. Dorch stepped up to the free-throw line early in the quarter, sinking both attempts to cut into the deficit. Shortly after, Pedraza connected on a jumper from outside the paint, giving the Gryphons some momentum. The duo would continue to shine throughout the quarter, with Dorch finding Pedraza for another score just two minutes later. Stephens would get involved once again at the end of the quarter, this time on the offensive end as fellow first year Audrey Mattison found the Alabama product for a score just before the buzzer. As the game progressed into the final 10 minutes of play, the Gryphons continued to push forward. Dorch showed her versatility by connecting on a three-pointer from the top of the key, marking her first collegiate triple. Kent would inject life into the team with her rebounding efforts, leading to multiple attempts from the line in the waning minutes of play. Dorch, Mattison, Ariana Spanopoulos and Perry Yun would all connect from the free-throw line in the final minutes, adding to the teams total.

Up Next

The Gryphons (4-12, Skyline 3-9) will return to action on Saturday, as mentioned above, as they host the Panthers of Old Westbury for a 2:00 p.m. showdown at the Campbell Sports Center. The team will look for a repeat performance of their 16-point victory over the Pantherse in November.
