Strong Fourth-Quarter Effort Leads Women's Basketball over Purchase

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team held Purchase College to just seven points in the fourth quarter en route to a 2025-opening victory over the hosting Panthers. The Gryphons defeated Purchase 66-59 for their third Skyline win of the season while dropping the Panthers to 2-5 in conference play.

Notable Performers
  • Gabby Hudson scored a game-high 23 points, 14 of which came from the free-throw line
  • Audrey Mattison connected three times from deep while racking up 11 points
  • Ariana Spanopoulos scored 11 points as well while swiping the ball three times

How it Happened

Emrie Pedraza helped the Gryphons get ahead early, scoring seven first-quarter points to go help the Gryphons stay with the Panthers. A Spanopoulos triple, a pair of Josie Kent free throws and a last-second triple by Pedraza herself closed the quarter with an 8-0 SLC run, putting the visitors ahead by a single point after ten minutes of play. The Panthers immediately answered by scoring the first nine points of the second frame, returning the lead to themselves by a tally of 19-17. Mattison would end the streak with her first score of the day with 7:25 to play, returning a one-point lead to the Gryphons. That lead would be shortly lived as another scoring run by the hosts, this time six unanswered, would give them a five-point advantage. Grace Carter would end that streak with a layup to keep SLC in the game. Another Mattison triple minutes later reduced the lead to a single point once again. Deja vu would fill the gym as the year would strike again from long range with just over a minute left, reducing the lead to one point again. Spanopoulos would then score with under ten seconds remaining to send the game into the halftime intermission tied at 34.

The Panthers got ahead early in the second half thanks to five straight points and a trio of blocks, building up a small lead that they would hold throughout the period. After getting to the line three times in the final minute-and-change, Hudson reduced the lead to four. As time expired in the period, a shot from deep drew a foul by the Purchase defender and sent the junior to the line for three more shots. After connecting on the trio of attempts, the Gryphons trailed by just one point heading into the final 10 minutes of play. The hosts maintained a small lead early in the quarter, leading by four with just under five minutes remaining. With 4:28 remaining, Hudson connected on a jumper to reduce the lead to two points before both teams went scoreless for nearly a minute-and-a-half. Spanopoulos would then hit her biggest shot of the day, connecting from deep with just over three minutes remaining to give the Gryphons a one-point advantage. Both teams would once again struggle to score, with the 60-59 tally remaining until a pair of free throws by Pedraza extended the lead to three points with 1:01 on the clock. Hudson would make four more free throws down the stretch to extend the lead as SLC held Purchase scoreless throughout the final four minutes and 52 seconds of the contest for the come-from-behind win.
