Women's Volleyball Sweeps Dolphins to Remain Spotless in Conference Play

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team completed a three-set sweep against the University of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins on Thursday night. The Gryphons put up a dominant 25-4 second set en route to their second conference victory of the week.

Notable Performers
  • Nikolet Vataj led the match with 10 kills, adding a pair of aces as well
  • Sophia Costa totaled 25 assists while adding eight digs and sprinkling in a trio of kills
  • Eva Anderson led all players with 10 digs, her third straight double-digit performance
  • Athena Kazos totaled nine kills, seven digs and four aces in the win

How it Happened

The first set was a back-and-forth affair throughout, with the two teams tying four times before the visitors jumped ahead 8-6. The Gryphons would immediately respond with a 6-0 run thanks to a pair of aces from Brynn Beck and two blocks, both featuring Carolyn Kelly. The Dolphins would stop the bleeding but a pair of Kazos aces would give the hosts four more consecutive scores and a 16-10 lead midway through the set. After continuing to go back-and-forth, the Gryphons took the final three points via a Kazos kill, Raegan Lacombe ace and a Carolyn Kelly solo block, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

The second set saw the Gryphons get ahead 6-1 early thanks to kills from Vataj, Kazos and Olivia Richard. After a service error gave the Dolphins their second point, Beck and Kazos each contributed a pair of kills, putting the hosts ahead 10-3. A UMSV kill stopped the run, but would not keep the Gryphons from taking the set, as Kazos stepped up to the line for the next 15 rallies. The senior put up a pair of aces, but it was four Vataj kills that fueled the run alongside points from Costa and Beck. After taking the final 15 points of the set, the team held a commanding 2-0 lead in the match, looking to close it out in another dominant third set.

Despite the strong stretch to end the third frame, the Gryphons would once again battle the Dolphins tightly in the third set. A 6-1 lead for the hosts would quickly be erased, tying the set at 7-7 and threatening to take the match to a fourth set. The Gryphons would take six of the next eight points to re-establish a lead and would hold onto the advantage throughout. It would be Eve Iceton to seal the match with a kill set up by Anderson to give the team a 25-17 third-set victory and a 3-0 sweep in the match.
