Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

All-Around Effort leads Women's Volleyball to Four-Set Win over Bears

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team took down the Bears of St. Joseph's Brooklyn on Tuesday night in four sets, including a marathon third-set victory by a score of 36-34. The team will now return home for two straight matches, including its 2025 senior day on Saturday.

Notable Performers

  • Sophia Costa put up her third consecutive 40-assist performance and second straight double-double
  • Athena Kazos registered a double-double with a team-high 16 kills and 18 digs
  • Olivia Richard totaled a season-high 12 kills, hitting .545 with no errors

How it Happened

In the opening set, the Gryphons fought through an early back-and-forth stretch before the Bears capitalized on a late service run to take the frame 25-19. From there, Sarah Lawrence flipped the momentum entirely. The second set saw the Gryphons take control early behind a 7-0 run capped off by an Eve Iceton kill. The Gryphons held off a late push by the hosts, using a Nikolet Vataj kill to seal a 25-23 victory and tie the match at one set apiece.

The third set turned into a marathon thriller, with both sides trading blows deep into extra points. Sarah Lawrence's resilience shone through late as kills by Iceton and Richard gave the team a 24-24 draw, keeping the set going. Kazos and Vataj led the offense in the extra time, before the latter gave the team set point at 35-34. An SJBK error gave the Gryphons a 36-34 win and gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the match. In the fourth, SLC maintained its momentum, using a trio of aces by Iceton as well as a pair of Richard/Costa blocks to secure the match. Fittingly, a Richard kill thanks to a set from Costa would seal the match and send the Gryphons back to Bronxville with another Skyline victory.
