Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Kelly Lights it Up From Deep as Men's Basketball Battles Pratt into Final Minutes

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team battled the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute on Wednesday night, falling by a total of 65-69. The Gryphons got 27 points from Eamon Kelly as the senior hit six triples and went 7-8 from the free throw line. The Gryphons return to action on Saturday against Centenary University.

Notable Performers
  • Kelly scored 27 points, adding in a trio of steals and five rebounds
  • Andrew Kim scored 17 points for the Gryphons, distributing six assists
  • Chris Dougherty pulled down 10 rebounds, blocked two shots and scored six points
How it Happened

Pratt opened on a 5-0 run behind Thomas Phillips, but the Gryphons steadied themselves as Braden Burman buried a three and Andrew Kim knocked down a pair at the line to tie it. Even as Phillips continued to pour in early points, SLC answered each push. Kim scored on a second-chance opportunity, Burman connected again from deep, and Kelly's three from the left wing cut the deficit to 19-14. That shot helped spark SLC's best stretch of the half: as Burman drilled another three to cut the deficit to two points. Kelly kept the Gryphons close throughout the final minutes of the second-half with 11 points, including a four-point play that catapulted the hosts into the lead. An immediate response by the Cannoneers tied the game, and despite two more late free throws by Kelly, another Pratt triple gave the visitors a one-point advantage heading into the intermission.

Kim jump-started the half with a second-chance jumper, and Kelly followed with a transition layup to push SLC ahead 36-33. Kim then sliced to the rim again, capping a 6-0 stretch. Pratt answered through Phillips and Malik Davis, who repeatedly attacked the lane, but Kelly drilled a three to keep the Gryphons up 41-36. Both teams traded baskets until Davis powered through for back-to-back scores and, after a technical foul on the visitors, the Gryphons moved ahead 45-44. Kelly and John Kairouz converted on back-to-back looks from deep minutes later to put the Gryphons up once again. Triples from Matonti and Kelly answered Pratt scores, but the Cannoneers would lean on Phillips to take an advantage into the final minutes. Kim scored one last time with over a minute left to bring the team within a single possession, but the visitors would escape with the victory after a true back-and-forth affair.
