How it Happened
The Gryphons got going early as a Coughlin hit back-to-back three pointers to put the hosts up 10-2. Hudson and Theriault added scores in transition before another triple by Coughlin extended the SLC lead to thirteen points just five minutes into the game. Four late-quarter points from
Jade Ling Eng-Stewart and scores from both Hudson and Dorch put the Gryphons up by 13 heading into the first intermission. Coughlin kept up the momentum in the second quarer, with a jumper before a three-point play by Hudson extended the lead to 16. After trading points,
Sarah Theriault would force a turnover and turn it into two points on the end, giving the Gryphons a 17-point advantage. The Gryphons got a pair of scores from
Jersana Moore and a late-half triple from
Audrey Mattison, but nine late points from Hunter's Alexa Charles kept the Hawks in the game, heading into the intermission down 14 points.
The third quarter saw a resurgence by the Hawks, as 13 third-quarter points by Charles lead a 32-point frame by the visitors, extinguishing the double-digit lead. The Hawks closed the gap to just one possession with under four to play, eventually tying the game at 55 with two minutes and change to play. An Eng-Stewart triple would be the lone field goal for the Gryphons in the final two minutes as the Hawks continued to surge and carried a four-point advantage into the final frame. The Gryphons wasted no time erasing the Hunter lead in the fourth quarter, as a 10-0 run fueled by six
Gabby Hudson points put the hosts back in the lead. Charles answered for the visitors, but a Moore-to-Dorch connection followed by a rejection by Dorch kept the Gryphons in the lead. The visitors made it a one-possession game again with under three to play, but a 7-0 run by the Gryphons gave the team a nine-point cushion with 30 seconds remaining. Charles added another three points to her game-high total of 39, but the Gryphons held on for the victory.Â
