First-Year Duo Combines for 40 in Triumph over Panthers

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team got a combined 40 points from a pair of first years on Saturday as they handily defeated the visiting Old Westbury Panthers by a score of 80-39.

Notable Performers
  • Jade Ling Eng-Stewart poured in 21 points, including five three-pointers
  • Sarah Theriault scored an efficient 19 points along with five rebounds and five assists
  • Kaila Dorch scored 12 points, going 4-for-4 from the field with four rebounds

How it Happened

The first-year duo of Eng-Stewart and Theriault got going early, as Theriault found her classmate open for two straight three-pointers as the Gryphons jumped ahead early. Gabby Hudson forced a turnover and scored at the other end before Eng-Stewart returned the favour by finding Theriault for a layup. The latter scored three more points in a row, as the Gryphons went up 13-0 thanks to a combined 11 points from the pair. After the Panthers got on the board, the hosts would continue to convert on the offensive end, as the Theriault-to-Eng-Stewart connection struck again before the latter found teammate Audrey Mattison for a three-pointer to go up 18-5. Jersana Moore added a transition score before a last-minute score by Theriault put the team up 22-8 after ten minutes. The team continued their strong first-half effort into the second quarter, with two more triples by Eng-Stewart and a late-quarter score by Madeline Moor to send the Gryphons into the break with a 32-point lead.

The third quarter saw the Panthers get going offensively, matching the Gryphons' output as a variety of scorers found the bottom of the net. Dorch scored six of her 12 points in the frame, while Eng-Stewart continued to lead the team with seven more points, including another triple and a fastbreak score after her own steal. A last-minute three-pointer by the Panthers kept SLC's lead at 32 entering the final frame. Samantha Pape opened the fourth quarter with a score for the Gryphons after a three-point play by the visitors, before Theriault scored the next eight SLC points. Kendall Stephens got in on the scoring with back-to-back second-chance scores in the final two minutes and Anastasia Kol-Balfour sunk two final free throws to secure a Skyline win for the Gryphons.
