Women's Basketball Continues Surge on the Road against Maccabees

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team used a 47-point second half to take down Yeshiva on the road Tuesday, getting 43 points from a standout pair of first years in the penultimate game of the fall semester.

Notable Performers
  • Sarah Theriault led the way with 22 points, adding in seven rebounds on 50% shooting
  • Jade Ling Eng-Stewart posted her second straight 20-point effort, pulling down 10 boards and grabbing four steals
  • Gabby Hudson flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and six assists
How it Happened

The Gryphons got going early, scoring the game's nine points as Eng-Stewart and Theriault each scored in the paint before a Kaila Dorch triple put the team up 9-0. The Maccabees responded by a triple of their own and another score to close the gap, but an Eng-Stewart three-pointer answered for the Gryphons, keeping the visitors up 12-5. Five straight YU points, including a Tali Cohen three-pointer reduced the lead to just one possession before Theriault returned to the scoring column for the Gryphons to put the team up 14-10. Two more long-range connections by the hosts fueled an 8-0 run that gave them the lead, withstanding late scores by Eng-Stewart and Jersana Moore to end the quarter with a 23-19 lead over the Gryphons.

In the second quarter, the teams went back-and-forth, exchanging scores with Yeshiva maintaining a lead halfway through the period. Hudson got going with a steal that turned into a transition layup for the senior, before getting to the line and knocking down the front end to bring the Gryphons within four. Eng-Stewart added a layup before a pair of makes at the line from Theriault tied the game at 34. The first year added in a free throw as well before forcing a YU turnover and finding Eng-Stewart for a layup to cap a 10-0 first-half ending run.

The third quarter started with back-to-back scores by Theriault and Dorch, but the Maccabees kept within reach throughout the first three minutes and change. After a second-chance score by YU to cut the lead to six, a 7-0 run by the Gryphons extended the lead to double-digits for the first time. A three-point play by Hudson and a pair of scores by Theriault put the team up 52-39 with just under six to play in the frame. Colleen Coughlin added three scores throughout the remainder of the quarter to send the teams into the final frame with a 15-point lead.

The Maccabees opened the final frame of the game with a triple, but the Sarah Lawrence seniors stepped up to answer, as Coughlin, Dorch and Hudson helped extend the lead to 18 points in response. Theriault and Eng-Stewart each added scores as well, while Moore added a transition layup, joining her classmates as the Gryphons maintained a commanding lead. Moore continued a strong final few minutes, stealing a ball and finding teammate Perry Yun for the game-sealing score, sending the team back to Bronxville with a 26-point conference victory.
