Quartet of Double-Digit Scorers Leads Men's Basketball over Previously Skyline-Undefeated Privateers

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team handed Maritime their first conference loss of the season on Saturday, taking down the Privateers on the road by a score of 67-60. A quartet of Gryphons scored double-digit points as the balanced scoring effort helped move the team to 9-1 in conference contests.

Notable Performers
  • Chris Dougherty put up another double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards
  • Thomas Matonti connected on three of his four shots from deep, including an important basket with just over two minutes remaining
  • Eamon Kelly and Braden Burman added 11 points each in the winning effort

How it Happened

The game started with Chris Dougherty winning the tip-off, immediately setting the tone for Sarah Lawrence. The Gryphons struck first when Braden Burman knocked down a jumper off an assist from Andrew Kim. Dougherty followed with a layup in the paint, quickly building early momentum before Kim scored with a putback to give the team a 6-0 lead. As the first half progressed, Kelly found Lemar Fulmore Jr. for a driving layup, and Matonti made an immediate impact off the bench, draining a pair of three-pointers to give the Gryphons a boost. On the defensive end, Dougherty dominated the glass, pulling down key rebounds to limit Maritime's second-chance opportunities. Kelly and Fulmore added pressure on the perimeter, forcing turnovers and pushing the pace in transition. After a last-second score by the Privateers, the Gryphons entered the intermission trailing by just two, with the score sitting at 34-32.

Coming out of the break, Sarah Lawrence wasted no time reclaiming the lead. Furlong opened the half with a three-pointer, assisted by Burman. Burman then found his own score, connecting from long range off a Dougherty pass to extend the lead to four. Moments later, Dougherty muscled his way inside for a putback layup, giving the Gryphons a six-point advantage. Midway through the second half, Kelly and Furlong delivered clutch three-pointers, extending Sarah Lawrence's lead. Dougherty continued to be a force in the paint, pulling down offensive rebounds and converting on second-chance opportunities. With just under three minutes remaining, Matonti hit another timely shot from beyond the arc, giving the Gryphons a four-point advantage as the top teams in the conference remained close. Fulmore Jr. calmly sank two free throws in the final minute of play, securing the 67-60 win.
