Trio of Gryphons Earn Double-Doubles as Women's Basketball hosts Bears

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence women's basketball team fell to the Bears of St. Joseph's Brooklyn in a closely-contested Skyline bout on Wednesday night. The Gryphons fell by a score of 53-60 despite a trio of double-doubles for Gabby Hudson, Kaila Dorch and Audrey Mattison.

Notable Performers
  • Hudson led the team with 18 points while pulling down 10 rebounds and grabbing a pair of steals
  • Dorch followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds of her own in addition to a block
  • Mattison connected three times from distance, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds
  • Ariana Spanopoulos pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in addition to four assists and a steal

How it Happened

The Bears got ahead early, as a pair of triples got their offense kickstarted, but Dorch would be SLC's answer at the onset, scoring the team's first four points as the visitors built up an 11-4 lead. The rest of SLC joined in on the scoring effort, embarking on an 8-0 run to close the quarter as Spanopoulos scored three points, Hudson added a jumper in the paint and Mattison found classmate Emrie Pedraza for a three-pointer that gave SLC a 12-11 advantage after the first 11 minutes. The second quarter remained tight, as a pair of Hudson free throws early extended the SLC lead before another long-range connection by the visitors tied the game at 14. Dorch went back to work, scoring SLC's next five points via a layup and a three-point play that put the Gryphons up by three halfway through the period. Hudson got going next, going coast-to-coast, before Mattison connected on her first triple of the night to make it a two-possession game. Dorch and Hudson each converted on a pair of free throws down the stretch, but the Bears took the final five points of the half to bring the lead back down to one at the intermission.

The start of the second half saw an volley of three-pointers fall for SJBK, as a half-opening score inside by Dorch was answered with a trio of triples and an 11-0 run that put the Bears up 38-30. Hudson and Mattison both responded to cut into the lead and a triple by Mattison a few possessions later ended up reducing the SJBK lead to three points. The Bears answered with a score inside, but Hudson and Mattison went to work again, with the former scoring unassisted before finding Mattison for her third three-pointer of the evening as the first year tied the game with 54 seconds left in the period. With time winding down, a second-chance score by the visitors gave them a two-point lead with 33 seconds remaining that would carry over into the final quarter of play. The Bears opened the final quarter with a score, before first year Kendall Stephens got in on the scoring effort for SLC, once again drawing the Gryphons within a score of the lead. Both teams would go cold as the next three minutes would find no scores, before Hudson went coast-to-coast again, this time tying the game at 46 points apiece. After an empty possession for the visitors, Hudson would take matters into her own hands once again, giving the Gryphons a two-point advantage with 4:18 to play. The Bears would tie the game up less than a minute later, but Hudson would steal the ball on the ensuing SJBK possession and get to the line, going 2-for-2 and putting the hosts ahead by two with three minutes to play. After a pair of made free-throws by the Bears, a score off an SLC turnover gave the visitors a two-point advantage. Dorch would go to the line, making one of two shots, but an answer from long range by the Bears would end up sealing the victory. Pedraza would find Dorch for the Gryphons' final score of the game with 17 seconds left, but the Bears would hold on for a 60-53 victory.
