Last-Second Heroics by Kim lift Men's Basketball over Knights

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence men's basketball team used a last-second three-point play by sophomore Andrew Kim to escape with a victory over the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College on Saturday afternoon. The Knights were red-hot from deep, hitting 50% of their three-pointers in the loss.

Notable Performers
  • Kim scored a team-high 17 points, adding in four assists
  • Thomas Matonti earned his first collegiate start, scoring 14 points on four made three-pointers
  • Chris Dougherty earned another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds in addition to a block

How it Happened

Kim got going early, scoring the team's first five points as both teams were rolling offensively. Dean Furlong assisted on SLC's first three scores, the last being a Chris Dougherty layup that gave the team a small 7-5 lead. The visitors took the next eight points as they connected on three of their first four triples of the game, but it would be a long-range score by Matonti to stop the run. Another triple minutes later, this time by junior Braden Burman, would keep the Gryphons knocking on the door, but an answer two possessions later by the Knights would return a four-point lead to the visitors. A one-for-two trip to the line and a made triple by Aiden Morel would give SLC their first lead since the 18-minute mark, putting them up 23-21 with nine to play in the half. Kim would earn a three-point play of his own to extend the lead and Kyle Jefferson would get one of his own minutes later to keep the team ahead. A huge Kim-to-Dougherty connection with four minutes remaining got the Campbell Sports Center going and a made triple by Kim with under a minute to play sent the team into the half with a five-point lead.

The Knights came out of the intermission firing, with scores on their first two possessions to even the game up at 40 points apiece. Another SLC answer from long-range woud come off the hands of Burman, but the Knights would not allow the hosts to pull away. Back-to-back SLC possessions would see John Kairouz score off a Lemar Fulmore Jr. pass, but a pair of triples in response by the visitors would give them a one-point lead with 15 minutes and change remaining. Matonti's third triple of the game would tie the score minutes later, but MSMC continued applying pressure, earning a second-chance score on their next possession. SLC's Noah Elovitz-Fields would step up to the line twice in the ensuing two minutes, converting on all four of his attempts to tie the game and then give SLC a five-point advantage. Once again, the Knights would ont go away, cutting the lead to one point multiple times before a three-point play with under six to play gave them a one-point advantage. The Gryphons would continue to score, but the Knights were able to answer at each injunction, eventually building a six-point advantage with 2:31 to play, threatening to earn their second Skyline win of the season. After a lone make from the line off the hands of Burman, the Gryphons entered the final minute of play trailing by five. Their next possession saw Matonti hit his biggest shot of the game, connecting from deep off an Andrew-Kim pass to reduce the lead to two points. After a missed three by MSMC and just seconds left in the game, Kim delivered the biggest moment of the night, driving into the lane for a contested layup and drawing a foul. He calmly sank the free throw, putting Sarah Lawrence ahead 79-78. The Gryphons' defense then stepped up in the final possession, as Burman recorded a clutch block to seal the victory.
