Softball Wraps up Spring Break Trip with Doubleheader at Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, PENN. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team rounded out a brief spring break trip with a pair of losses to the University of Valley Forge on Monday. The Gryphons fell 11-0 and 10-2 to the Patriots after falling in a pair of games to Gallaudet to open the trip. The team will now return back to Bronxville in advance of their March 20th home opener against John Jay.

Notable Performers
  • Shirin Pechefsky tossed 4.2 innings in game one, striking out a pair and adding a single at the plate for the Gryphons
  • Isabella Zuniga tossed 4.2 innings of her own in game two, forcing six groundouts and earning a hit as well
  • Emma Alexandria Androne drove in one of SLC's two runs with an RBI double in game two, the first hit of her career
  • Kyra Johnsen drove in the other SLC run, adding in a stolen base as well

How it Happened

Pechefsky and teammate Isabella Boissonnault got the Gryphons going early, with back-to-back singles in the top of the ffirst, but SLC would not be able to bring either around to score. Despite the early offensive output, the Patriots dominated game one from the onset. The hosts scored six first-inning runs on the back of four hits and four walks, before Pechefsky forced a pop up that was handled by Malia Rode to end the inning. The Gryphons would be held without a baserunner for the remainder of the game, but Pechefsky would hold Valley Forge to just two hits in innings two-through-four, keeping the lead at just six before an offensive outburst by the hosts in the fifth inning, tacking on five more runs to end the game and take game one by a score of 11-0.

Game two saw Boissonnault single in the first once again, but the transfer was stranded as the Gryphons could not get on the board early. The Patriots once again threatened to score in the first, but an inning-ending strikeout by Zuniga stranded a pair of runners and kept the score at 0-0. The Patriots would put together only three hits in the second, but a walk, error and four steals would help the hosts put up four runs before Zuniga was able to strand a pair once again by forcing a groundout. An inning-ending double play would get the Gryphons out of the third inning but the hosts got their bats going once again in the fourth, using a pair of singles and a walk to bring two more across the plate, giving themselves a six-run lead. The visiting bats came alive in the top of the fifth, stringing together four straight hits as Emily Leonard, Ariana Spanopoulos, Johnsen and Androne all helped SLC put a pair of runs on the board. Androne drove in the first, with a double that allowed Leonard to cross the plate. Johnsen followed up with a single that brought around Spanopoulos, cutting the Valley Forge lead to four. The Patriots tacked on another four runs in the bottom of the frame, fuled by a trio of singles, to end the game and keep the Gryphons' bats from getting another chance.
