Softball Opens 2025 Home Slate by Hosting Reigning CUNYAC Champions

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team fell in their 2025 home opener to the Bloodhounds of John Jay, who made an NCAA tournament appearance last season after a 32-win season, including a CUNYAC conference tournament victory.

Notable Performers
  • Shirin Pechefsky tossed 6.1 innings, forcing 10 flyouts by the Bloodhounds. The junior added a base hit in the first game as well
  • Bella Zuniga tossed the other 3.2 innings, forcing seven groundouts as she wrapped up game one
  • Kyra Johnsen earned the team's lone hit in game two, singling to right field to break up John Jay's no-hit bid

How it Happened

Game one started off well, with a strikeout from Pechefsky and a caught baserunner by Isabella Boissonnault giving the Gryphons two quick outs. A pair of two-out doubles would bring a runner around for the Bloodhounds, but Pechefsky would force a popout to keep the visitors from adding any more runs to the board. Six hits and seven walks would give the Bloodhounds an 11-run inning in the second frame, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Maleea Gallaspy. The Gryphons would go down quietly in the bottom of the first two frames, keeping the Bloodhounds ahead. The visitors would tack one more on in the fourth before Pechefsky stepped up with one out and singled to right field, finally finding the gap after the Gryphons managed to find John Jay's gloves consistently throughout the first three innings. The final frame would see two more scores by the visitors and the Gryphons would strand Ariana Spanopoulos after a two-out walk as the Bloodhounds took game one in five innings.

Game two was a much different affair, with a lone hit in the first for John Jay being shut out after a flyout caught by Emily Leonard ended the threat. The visitors would once again get the offense going in the second frame, this time crossing the plate four times, capping the inning with a sacrifice fly before a groundout back to Pechefsky ended the inning. Another walk by Rode was once again countered with a John Jay double play, leaving the Gryphons scoreless through two. A two-run home run in the third extended the advantage, but two straight flyouts to Spanopoulos in center field ended the inning, keeping the lead at six. The visitors would tack on their final two runs of the day in the fourth, with an RBI-triple and an RBI groundout bringing around the scores before a strikeout ended the frame and brought the Gryphons back to the plate. Johnsen opened the frame with a single to right field, before a sacrifice bunt by Pechefsky gave SLC a runner in scoring position. Another walk by Rode would follow two batters later, but a strikeout would end the frame and strand two runners on base. A lone single in the top of the fifth would not be an issue for Pechefsky, as she retired the final batter of the frame with a strikeout to wrap up her day. The Gryphons went down in order in the final frame, wrapping up a much-improved game two against the reigning CUNYAC champions.
