PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team fell to the conference-leading Valiants of Manhattanville by a pair of 8-0 scorelines on Wednesday. The Gryphons broke up two perfect game bids with late-game walks, as
Maeve Collins and
Malia Rode spoiled history for the hosting Valiants.
Notable Performers
- Kyra Johsen tossed all eight innings for SLC, forcing six groundouts
- Rode and Collins drew the team's lone walks on the day
How it Happened
The Valiants showed why they sit atop the Skyline standings, exploding for eight scores in the first inning of game one on the back of three extra-base hits. The Gryphons were held in check offensively until Collins drew a free pass with two outs in the top of the fifth. Manhattanville's Samantha Walsh retired the final batter of the game with her 10th strikeout to secure the victory for the Valiants. In game two, it would be a similar story. The hosts would jump ahead to a 5-0 lead in the first before tacking on another in the second and two more in the third. SLC would once again go quietly until the fifth inning, with a leadoff walk by Rode giving the team a baserunner. A fielder's choice by
Sophie Grenke and an errant throw by Manhattanville moved Rode to second and gave the Gryphons a pair of baserunners with one out. Jori Wilkendorf closed out the game by retiring the next two batters and giving the Valiants their second 8-0 victory of the day.
