Game Recap: Softball |

Gryphons Take Early Lead against Golden Eagles

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. - The Sarah Lawrence softball team fell in both ends of Friday afternoon's doubleheader against St. Joseph's Long Island. The Gryphons fell 12-2 in game one before a three-run first inning in game two gave the hosts a lead before a three-run fourth inning propelled the visitors back into the lead.

Notable Performers
  • Kyra Johnsen scored a pair of runs for the Gryphons while leading off game two with a double
  • Isabella Boissonnault drove in both of SLC's first-game runs before crossing home plate for a run of her own in game two
  • Shirin Pechefsky tossed all 10 innings for the Gryphons, coaxing 21 flyouts across the two games and striking out three

How it Happened

Game one started with SJLI jumping ahead with a four-run first inning. The Golden Eagles then tacked on five more in the third to open up a 9-0 advantage. The Gryphons would answer back in the bottom of the third, with a pair of hit batsmen and a passed ball putting a pair of runners in scoring position. Boissonnault would step up and go back up the middle to plate both runners, reducing the lead to seven runs. A Kate Hansberry single threatened SJLI in the fourth, with the sophomore reaching third before the final two Gryphons were retired to keep the hosts at two runs. The visitors benefitted from four walks in the fifth to add on three more scores. Pechefsky would single in the bottom of the fifth and Boissonnault would reach on an error, but a hard hit line drive from Malia Rode would find the glove of SJLI's left fielder to shut down the Gryphons and claim a victory in game one.

Game two saw the Golden Eagles go in order before SLC came up to bat in the bottom of the first. Johnsen got the home bats going with a leadoff double to left field, with Pechefsky singling to keep the momentum going. After SLC's starter was thrown out attempting to take second, an errant pitch would plate Johnsen, giving the hosts their first lead of the day and foreshadowing a stronger offensive output in game two. Boissonnault and Rode drew back-to-back walks before a single by Hansberry allowed the former to score. Much like Johnsen, Rode would scamper home on a wild pitch to score the team's third run. Kendall Stephens would single to move Hansberry to third, but a fielder's choice would see the Golden Eagles cut down the SLC center fielder at the plate, preventing the hosts from adding to their three-run inning. The Gryphons would be held in check throughout the remainder of the inning, and the game, with a single by Rode in the sixth being the team's only other hit on the evening.
