HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team kicked off their weekend with two matches in Hoboken, taking on the hosting Stevens Ducks before a neutral-site match against SUNY Oneonta. The Gryphons fell in straight sets against the Ducks before forcing the Red Dragons to four sets before falling to wrap up the evening.

  • Sophia Costa's 46 assists led the team along with 17 digs
  • Brynn Beck totaled 15 kills and 19 digs, including a double-double against Oneonta
How it Happened

Match one saw the Gryphons jump ahead early to the tune of a 5-1 lead. The Gryphons got kills from Beck and Kazos early to solidify a lead. A pair of aces by Lila Nash helped the Gryphons to a 14-7 lead, but the Ducks would mount a 13-2 run to completely flip the set in their favor. Carolyn Kelly would stop the bleeding with a kill, but the Ducks would take five of the final six points to claim the set. The second set was dominated by the hosts, overcoming early scores from Olivia Richard and Costa to take a 25-8 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set was a dominant start by the Ducks, claiming the first 11 points of the set before the Gryphons got on the board. The visitors battled back for 13 points, but it would not be enough as the hosts held on for a three-set victory.

In the day's second match, the Gryphons battled the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta in a competitve four sets. The two teams found themselves knotted up at six points apiece early on before a six-point swing in favor of the Red Dragons turned the tides of the set. A pair of Eva Anderson aces fueled a four point swing in favor of SLC later in the set, but it would not be enough to bring the team back into the match as Oneonta claimed a 25-19 first-set victory. The second set saw the Red Dragons get out to a small lead before a five-point swing in favor of the Gryphons gave the team a one-point advantage 11-10. Oneonta would once again build up a lead before another run by SLC brought the set within one point with a 21-22 scoreline. The Red Dragons would reach set point, but three straight scores from the Gryphons tied the match up at 24 points apiece and keep the set alive. After trading points, consecutive Oneonta kills would give the team a two-set lead in the match. Sarah Lawrence would come out firing on all cylinders in the third set, jumping out to a 10-2 lead highlighted by a Richard/Beck block and kills by four different Gryphons. The team would remain ahead throughout the set and a Costa-to-Beck connection would wrap up the 25-14 victory, forcing a fourth set. The two teams would once again go back-and-forth in the fourth set, with the Gryphons holding the advantage for the majority of the set. After leading 20-15, the Gryphons would surrender five consecutive points, allowing the Red Dragons to tie the set at 20 points apiece.Vataj and Beck would register kills down the stretch, but Oneonta's Shea Landversicht would put up back-to-back kills to end the set and the match.
