HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Sarah Lawrence women's volleyball team wrapped up the final of three matches at Stevens Institute of Technology this weekend, falling to Springfield College in straight sets. The team will return to New York as they travel to Pratt Institute on Tuesday before hosting John Jay on Thursday in Bronxville.
Notable Performers
- Sophia Costa led the team with 18 assists, adding in five digs and three kills
- Athena Kazos's seven kills were a team high, as were her eight digs
- Brynn Beck totaled six kills, six digs, three blocks and an ace for SLC
How it Happened
The Gryphons played a competitve first set against Springfield, despite falling behind 5-0 early. Back-to-back scores from Costa stopped the run, but the Pride would remain ahead. Thanks to a pair of kills by Beck and a 6-1 run by the Gryphons, the two teams found themselves knotted up at eight points apiece. The Pride pulled away with a 5-1 run of their own, but this time the Gryphons could not get back into the set. A late block by Beck and
Carolyn Kelly would not be enough to rally, as the Pride took the set 25-18. The second set saw Springfield jump ahead to a commanding 12-4 lead. Kills from Beck, Kazos, Kelly and
Nikolet Vataj would get the Gryphons on the board, but it would not be enough as they fell 13-25. In the third and final set, Springfield once again got ahead early, this time to the tune of a 14-4 lead. The Gryphons went on a 5-0 run late in the set thanks to a pair of kills from Beck, but it would not be enough to stop a 25-14 win for the Pride.
