How it Happened
The Gryphons and Canonneers battled throughout a tight first set, before a 10-1 SLC run broke an 11-11 tie and gave the Gryphons a commanding lead. The run was fueled by a trio of aces from Vataj and a pair of kills by
Brynn Beck. The Gryphons closed out the set as a pair of Kazos kills and an
Alex Pantoliano ace gave the team match point before a Pratt error sealed the first-set victory for the visitors. The second set was a similar story, but this time an early run from the Gryphons would fuel the victory. After a 6-0 start, SLC maintained a lead before back-to-back aces by
Lila Nash sealed the set and gave the team a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set saw the hosts jump ahead 10-4 and hold a lead for the majority of the set. A 5-0 run by SLC down the stretch, including an
Eve Iceton kill and another Vataj ace, tied the set at 24, but the hosts took the next two points to force a fourth set. The fourth set saw the Gryphons hold a marginal lead throughout, but four consecutive errors by the Cannoneers in the waning minutes of the match allowed the Gryphons to take a 25-19 victory and return to Bronxville with a 3-1 victory.
