How it Happened
The first set was close at the onset, with the two teams remaining tight through the first 20 points. The Bloodhounds were not content with their 11-9 lead, embarking on an 8-0 run fueled by five aces and moving to 19-9 in the set. Kills by Beck and Kazos down the stretch would not be enough for the Gryphons to rally, as the visitors held on for a 25-15 first-set victory. The second set was a different story, as SLC got ahead to an early lead, with a few John Jay errors giving the team a 13-4 lead. Beck put up a trio of kills throughout the middle of the set and a block by Costa and
Olivia Richard kept the team ahead. A
Jenna Lehnhart kill would put the team up 23-19 and a pair of Bloodhound errors would give the hosts a 25-20 win to tie the match at one set apiece.Â
The third set looked as if the pendulum had swung back in favor of the Bloodhounds, as five total aces and four kills from standout hitter Jadyn Orava gave them a 12-3 lead. The Gryphons began to fight their way back into the set, with a trio of kills from Kazos fueling a four-point swing and a pair of aces from Pantoliano adding on a few rallies later as they eventually tied the set at 15 points apiece. The visitors would once again jump ahead to a score of 23-18, but the Gryphons would rally to close the gap to one with an
Eve Iceton kill and Pantoliano's third ace of the set. The resurgence from SLC would not be enough, as a John Jay kill would give the Bloodhounds the set by a score of 25-23 and give them a 2-1 lead in the match. The visitors would remain firmly in control throughout the fourth set, getting ahead 9-2 before eventually taking the final five points to secure the non-conference victory.
