How it Happened
The Gryphons started the game off strong, with a block by Dorch turning into a jumper by Theriault before the first year returned the favor with an assist as Dorch scored inside. Hudson added a layup a minute later and the hosts found themselves up 6-3 after two minutes of play. The Knights stormed back, but another score by Theriault put the Gryphons on top once again. A 7-0 MSMC run capped with a triple put the visitors on top 14-8, but the Gryphons were still not going away. Hudson took a steal and scored on the other end before
Colleen Coughlin found
Audrey Mattison for a score that kept the hosts within two possessions. A five-point swing in favor of the Knights threatened to open up the lead in the final minutes, but
Kendall Stephens and
Ariana Spanopoulos both converted on looks in the final minute to bring the Gryphons within six after 10 minutes of play. The teams continued trading scores in the second quarter, but a pair of mid-period triples by the visitors opened up a double-digit lead. A three-point play by Theriault and scores by Dorch and
Jade Ling Eng-Stewart kept the Gryphons in the game, but the Knights still carried a double-digit lead into the intermission.
Coughlin opened the second half with a three-pointer thanks to an assist from Dorch, who then found Hudson for a score as the Gryphons kept within striking distance. The senior forward then stepped into a role as a scorer, converting twice in the paint to cut the lead to ten with 5:41 remaining in the quarter. The teams traded scores before Dorch struck again, this time reducing the lead to eight. The Gryphons stayed close, but five straight points from MSMC's Brianna Guglielmo sent the Knights into the final quarter with a 15-point advantage. The hosts got three early scores in the final frame, as Coughlin, Hudson and
Darby Stayton all scored to keep the Gryphons within reach. The Knights took the next ten points to open up a 20-point lead, withstanding late three-pointers from both Spanopoulos and Mattison as they moved to 10-2 in conference play.
